Crane damage

Last spring Sand Hill Cranes descended upon my corn fields. They devastated 25 acres of one 40 acre field of corn that was about three inches high. I counted over 200 Cranes in the one field. I took my shotgun and fired up in the air. They flew to the other end of the field and went back to pulling up the corn plants. I went to the Department of Ag to see what I could do about them. They referred me to the Michigan DNR. I went to them to see if I could shoot them, they referred me back to the Dept. of Ag, saying that it was a migratory bird, and is protected. After half a dozen calls, one person at the Dept. of Ag said they have little devices that shoot a shotgun shell primer off from a timer. He asked how large my lawn was. I told him I have over a thousand acres of corn that was being threatend. He hung up. This year I'm using the 3 S system with my .223.

For cripes sake, man, don't announce it here, or anywhere else. Best solution likely would be to install some invisible fence, and get a mutt or 3 to patrol the area, feed in a different area each night!

I know each state is different but I always thought as a farmer you can shoot anything that is endangering you making your lively-hood protected or not. I know plenty of guys who take care of pests like that with bird shot.

Not true! It is illeagal to shoot certain animals reguardless of what they are doing. Go shoot a timber wolf thats eating a calf or bald eagal thats taking your chickens and then call DNR.

Few years back a guy here in Mn had a large deer herd eating up his silage in a bunker. He wanted a permit to kill em. Mn DNR instead gave him fencing material to keep the deer out.

It isn't very smart posting on an open forum that you may be thinking about doing something illeagal.

sounds familiar. Few years back i had deer coming right into my freestall barn to eat tmr i feed the cows. I blasted every one of them. Told dnr they wernt to happy but i told them i would shoot any deer within a hundred yards of my barn.I dont need them kind of diseases killing my cows. You got a right to protect your livestock from any threat. And if I had bald eagles attacking my livestock i would shoot them too.

One of the three S's is "shut up." You've already violated that one...

...and going after birds with a .223? Seriously?

There is a little gun that shoots a "Bird Banger" About like the old M-80. I use to buy them and also a screamer the gun would shoot.

They were about $50.00 a hundred, plus a hazardous shiping charge.

But, last May, our wonderfull government made it illegal to buy them without and explosives permit. Have to go through the BATFE, file all sorts of forms. $100 for the permit, plus I think you would have to have approved "Bunkers" to store and transport the devices.

So basically they made these little bird scare devices as illegal and unobtainable as dynamite.

Man I am glad our government is looking out for us.

Bunch of them have moved in here in recent years. They have a nesting area on the neighbor"s swamp/woods in the next quarter. Always flying over, making trememdous amount of noise. Don"t think they have become problem pests YET, but I"ll keep them under servalence. Not shooting at them anyway. DNR takes a dim view of that.

Is that type of damage covered by crop insurance? If not then call your state representative or state senator to speed you damage claims through the DRN! They normally love to help out a constituent and getting credit for it.

You really can't do anything to prevent the damage, you'll drive yourself nuts if you try. Next time it happens you'll be better off to shoot pictures of the size of the flock and the damages. Be sure to call the DRN to inspect the damage and provide photographs to backup you claims.

If you shoot the birds do you intend to wipe out all 200 in the flock or just shoot enough to make you feel better? The public won't have any sympathy for you if you kill their protected birds.

Around here we have a problem with canadian geese that love to land and feast in our fields. Many farmers use propane canons which randomly makes a loud boom. Seems pretty effective. Also annoys the neighbors.

what would you do if a bald eagle was attacking your kids or something? I have never had a problem with bald eagles. They dont bother me and I dont bother them. I am just saying.

Too late for the 3 S system- you're already down to 2 S's.

Might try enlisting the kids in the local Ag class- Everybody bring a 12 guage, you buy ammo for all, station them all around and in the field. Whenever the flock starts to land, the nearest guys fire off a couple rounds into the air- flock tries to move to another area, same result. If they're migrating, shouldn't take long to convince them to move to the neighbors cornfield, where they could actually LAND, and eat HIS stuff.

Kinda thinking the cranes eating some corn won't put you out of business as fast as legal fees, fines and a stretch in the local detention center for killing a protected species. . .

Look up the AA12 shotgun. (fully automatic 12 gage)

Lead empties out of this gun like a firehose.

Do a search on Yahoo for it.

I forgot to mention......Military use only.

Avipel seed treatment claims to work well. I inquired about it a couple of years ago to stop damage from crows and turkeys , but it was not registered for use in my state ( NC ). No one at NC Dept. of Ag. or Extension service wants to help get it registered in NC. They say there is not a problem with crow and turkey damaging corn. BS.. They never planted any !! Most farmers take care of problem as they see fit.

Friends don't make friends accessories. If you're going to do something illegal don't plan it on the internet unless you're trying for the dumb criminals gig. Think you could find a wolf or bobcat to eat the birds? It's always fun to see the looks on the DNRs face when one protected species is eating another. If you could only lease a pack of wild hogs for a few days, let the hogs eat the birds then call the DNR they'll take care of the hogs.

Try that in Mn......you ain't going to pass GO.

I think you just broke the third rule of the 3S system,,,,,,,

Good luck with it.

A 22 might be a better choice. I have herd it told that when deer get to thick and gooberment beaurocrats can't find an answer a 22 is a good choice. If you can get with in 100 yrds I have herd it said that you can hit them a little far back. Not much noise to make the neibors wander what's go'n on and the buzzards show up a mile away. Cranes would be about the same, a few get thumped and take off, the rest leave with them.
