Has anyone shipped a tractor drawbar bare, not boxed?

UPS likes things covered in corrugated cardboard and about a half a roll of tape to hold it together. They may not accept bare iron. And write a address some where on the part.

Working at a machine shop, we do receive stock through UPS now & then that just has a tag on it but no box. They don't seem to have any issues with it. Just make sure it isn't covered in grease because I know I'd probably want to "loose" it myself instead of handleing it too much.

tried shipping a heavy pto gear box through ups for a case 2470 they wouldnt take it witout a box and after they put a thick layer of buble wrap. shipped a truck visor in just buble wrap though 2 months ago.

I had 3 of these cylinders shipped UPS to me just as you see them. About 25 lbs. Cost didn't seem any higher than a comparable item in a box or if so only a buck or two.

if you have your own shipping account, the driver will usually take them bare...its the knotheads at the shipping centers that really go by the book...i generally wrap sharp corners and havent had one come back yet.

(quoted from post at 19:18:14 03/26/12) Just with the ship to tag on it? UPS or USPS? 50" long x 35-40 lbs. Thanks, Paul

Shipped a bright orange one that way a couple of years ago via fedex...buyer never did get it. I had to file a claim to get him his money back.....

I shipped one that way and have bought a couple that way. got to be sure the shipping label cannot be removed easy cause if it gets lost where can the item go.

Thank you all, I think I better roll/wrap some cardboard around it and put a few bands on it anyway, thanks again, Paul

I had a set of car tires shipped to me once, they came taped together in 2 sets of 2. I watched the ups guy pull them off the truck and attempt to load them onto a hand truck.... round end stacked on top of round end. Darn thing kept rolling off- imagine that. I think he tried that about a dozen times before settling on carrying each bundle by hand.

Maybe that's why they want a box.

I have shipped lots of motorcycle frames that way.All using UPS. last time the guy at the shipping place was measuring for a box when I asked what he was doing he said "you can't ship it just like this" I told him he already did it for me in the past and was not a problem. He told me to leave my number in case UPS didn't take it. They shipped it. You can't have anything unsafe or sharp edged hanging off the part but as long as you have a cardboard label they will take the part and ship it.

I shipped a three point rototiller from Ma. to Mi. a few years ago by UPS. Took it apart and put computer printed labels on each part. Payed for the shipping on the computer and went and found a UPS truck. They shipped it, no boxes of any kind. There web site explains it all.

The box and padding requirement may be to avoid damaging the shipper's automatic conveyor systems and also damaging other items being shipped. Imagine the damage a heavy un-padded drawbar could do to your luggage in an airport baggage handling system.

Do shippers charge more for unboxed items?

I wanted to ship an iron bar one time. I was going to ship it by DHL but they wouldn't take it unless it was wrapped with no sharp edges. They said it could damage the shipping container if it moves around.
