My little 96 s-10 (that i use to fuel my equip) keeps setting a code. Evaporative emissions leak(small). My haynes manual says that the charcoal canister and lines are most likely the culprit, but doesn't the gas cap also play into that system? Ive look at the canister and lines and dont see anything wrong. where would u guys look. Thanks for the help

That's the same fault you'll get if you leave the gas cap off, so yes the gas cap is part of that system.

Gas cap probably first thing to check - especially the O ring gasket.

There is a little plastic box back near the rear of gas tank, has a solonoid and air filter media in it. I've had them fail. Techs want to put a new one in. I didn't have the right part one Sunday, so I disassembled old one, and cleaned it up - still working OK after a year. (This is on Chevy Blazer, but ought to be similar.)

Like Ray said, vent solonoid over rear axle. Sometimes you can get by with cleaning it.

The evaporative emissions system includes the filler neck and cap, tank, hoses to and from the charcoal cannister and valves like the vent valve. Small leaks are very small, around .020 in diameter. You can't see them. This is why we "smoke test" the systems to find them. It's a liquid smoke machine that pushes a slightly pressurized smoke into the evaporative system with common outlets blocked off, like the intake. That is your best bet in doing the repair, otherwise you can guess and replace parts because you would likely never see the problem. A common GM problem area is the vent valve, but common doesn't mean it is. Hope this helps. Gerard
