Coolant additive to increase nitrate level

Just did a test strip to check the nitrite, ph, and temp for freezing of my car with a gas engine. The strip shows that the nitrite level is very low. It reads 0 and the strip says that it should be 1600. What do you add to improve this.

Bob, If I understand it correctly, the nitrate additive is needed for diesel engines with wet sleeves. It stops external corrosion on the wet sleeves. On a gas engine, you typically do not have wet sleeves, and don"t need any nitrate additive. Someone will correct me if I am wrong. I don"t think that you have any problem.

Don't worry about it! Nitrate is only a concern with diesel engines (it's needed to control cavitation/erosion on the coolant side of the cylinder liners).

While there was not as much of a problem in the 3010-4020 motors, the 219 and 329's had a lot of problems with cavitation. However, JD highly recommends conditioner in all of it's motors. It does work, and isn't too pricey.

The bquestion is more about corrosion protection. I urge you to replace the coolant at the service interval ( either time or mileage). Corrosion inhibitors are inportant in an engine. I have replaced head gaskets, radiators and heater cores which were corroded through. Hope this helps. Gerard
