8n hyd pump gaskets

I just got my gasket set from YTMAG. I'm putting the hyd pump back together and then in. Question is, do I use a thin film of RTV gasket in conjunction with the paper gaskets? When I took it apart, the installer used so much that it oozed everywhere.

On the hyd pump which comes out the bottom if you use any use just enough to hold the gasket in place but me I do not use any. On the cover gasket DO NOT use so much as a drop of the stuff or you will most likely be doing it all again

I, myself, always use it on just one side of the gasket..usually, the side that is removable. EG, when putting valve covers on..only use it on the gasket to cover, but not on the block...in your case, just on the lift cover side and not on the pump case/chassis. Of course, this is preference..I have always heard a gasket doesn't need anything to seal, but the gasket itself..I like throwing a little on there to hold the gasket in place until I get it positioned. I think the main thing is to make sure the mating surfaces are clean and you shouldn't have a problem.

Better to use non-hardening Permatex. Trouble with RTV is that if there's any excess that oozes out to the side (and its very tricky getting just enough, and not too much), it may eventually break off and plug things up.

Yeh, I think with those cast parts- you may be better just using the gasket without anything on it, but may want to add just a little on your inspection plate covers.

Like old said, just a little does it, or it will look like you gooped it on, too. Once again, this is opinion- I have done it this way for 20 years on cars, tractors, boats, and other machines and have never had a problem with leaky gaskets. Once again, clean surfaces is the main thing, and torque specs are another to watch for. I dont think you will have to worry about the later on the old N so much, but if you have the specs- it only tkes a sec to check them with a torque wrench.

Thank you for the speedy replies. Evidently this tractor has a high tolerance for RTV ooze. The stuff was EVERYWHERE when I took it apart.
I want to make sure it does not leak, but don't want to do it over again.

For some odd reason on the N series ford tractor using much if any thing on the hyd gaskets get a person trouble. Something about how the system works and all and if you get some much as one drop in the wrong place you will have one of 2 things happen. You will have major leaks or a system to gets clogged with the junk both of them I have seen

On the N series it is best to leave the RTV in the store and not used it. Using it on the cover gasket you will be 99% sure to have to pull it off again because it will leak, ya sounds odd but if you check the N forum archives you will see it is said 1000s of times not to use gasket glue

Jessie.........NO RTV, understand??? Iff'n ya need to keep a gasket in place, thin dab of regular ol' chassis grease will do you. Remember to swipe ALL paper gaskets with warm WATER. relaxes the fibers and you don't tear the gasket. Simple, eh? .......Dell

On good paper gaskets I just work a little motor oil into them. That softens them up and lets them form to the mating surfaces.

Using anything on paper or cork gaskets usually will do more harm than good. Plus silicone should be outlawed for many to use.

I have taken many things apart that where ruined by too much silicone.
