auction saturday

I would say 90+% of auctions around here in NY have a buyers premium, are they not as common down that way? To me it doesn't make any difference, I just bid 10% lower than what I am willing ot pay.

I've used that Proxibid before. If you pick the item up on the day that they specify and pay by check or cash instead of leaving it on a card, they knock off 3%. At least they did on the sale I bought off of.

Buyer's premium auctions are not well liked here in the midwest, tho more & more short-sighted owners are using them.

An auctioneer represents the buyer, and should get their check from the auctioneer, not from the seller. If bidding accordingly then what's the big deal, but it is a big deal.

Typically on-line auctions collect a % from the seller and the buyer, both.

I don't really care for on-line auctions, like to see what I'm bidding on and who I'm bidding against.

I think a lot of folks stop bidding when thwey find out they are bidding against an unseen, unknown bidder. The connection problems and delays sure mess up the flow of an auction.

Folks do whatever they wish, but I don't think on-line auctions or buyer's premiums have only helped auctioneers, not the people trying to sell their life's work.

One way to get rid of the 10% penalty is to get a bunch of people at the auction to go along with you and you tell the auctioneer no 10% and when he says that it is still going to happen everyone just leave. If you have no buyers no auction. If everyone sticks together you can stop it. Odds are not everyone will leave so it won't work. I think the reason that they do it is to get the auction they tell the owner that they will guarantee so much money and this is a way that they can make up any shortfall. JMO

Not exactly! I bid 15-20% less on a 10% buyers premium. Every time I get outbid I make sure to let it be known to the auction company and the owner I would have bid more, but the buyer's premium held me back.

I'd like to get a hat made with a sign on the back that says "you're paying a 10% buyer premium" or something. And wear it at sales so all behind you bidding would be reminded of the extra BS fee.

The auctioneer is an agent for the seller, as stated on the bidder's number card. The buyer's premium for a single item up to $2501 is 10% in Central California. Above that there is none. Where there is a separate jewelery auction ring, it is 12%.
