heard on the 9 '0' clock news that a senior east of Denver, was scammed by some S.O.B. claiming to be for Publisher Clearing House, informed her that she won a prize amount, but she had to send $10k in advance for the taxes/prize, she was told, to go to wal-mart and buy w/m money card and send card numbers to phone number given to her....well it not a tractor/car/boat/etc scamming thing,,,those Bast@#$ don't care,,,they need to be taken the care of the old west ways, ROPE & TREE...

Absolutly!! question comes to mind, wasn't there any family members on hand to warn the person , that THIS IS A RIP OFF????? Was just wondering. LOU.

Bob my wife had same scam two years ago but she didn't fall for it. The guy on other end of phone got mad when she said she wouldn't send him a thing. I had one call me telling me that I had won 42 million dollars and wanted money. He hung up me when I told him to take the taxes out and send me what was left. Bob sometimes I think hanging is to easy on them we should make them suffer.

Lou, my mom had people try to pull scams on her, asking for bank account numbers and SS numbers and such. She got mad when we told her that the FBI would not ask for that info over the phone. Was sure we were wrong. Only thing that saved her was a local cop and long time family friend came as soon as we called.....she believed him. The best part was that she told them to call back as she had to retrieve those numbers (cause she did).....mom also sent money to all those "save a starving child ads on TV)....even after we showed her how her money was being spent. We just could not save her from herself.

Mom is 76 and lives in a kind of a retirement place. She's too hard headed to live with my brother. Real nice place with her own apartment and all the usual common areas of a place like that. The old women in there will scam each other from a couple bucks to some hefty amounts in the name of toys for kids, sick grandkids, anything they can think of. My brothers and other family tries to tell her about it and she just gets mad and won't speak to them for awhile..... About all there is to do is have one of the niece's, nephews, or grandkids go and ask her for money with a sob story, then give it to my brother to put in a bank account he has for her then just shifts it into the one she has access to as he sees it getting low. Hard to see folks get old.........

Rick & Dave, What a da%% shame that seniors are targeted for such scams. I would hope that they would have folks( family or friends) to guide em around such scams. I've seen a lot of it on T.V.
Some old folks has the feelings to help others no matter what. God bless em, but to give it (money) to the scam artist isn't going to help the children, pets, etc. Would be great if the government closed em down. Maybe the I.R.S. should do a thorough audit.I know it is hard to convince the old folks , that the adds are a scam but it sure is necessary to keep on trying . Warmest regards LOU.

I bank at a small country bank. The manager will not give a person a large amount of money. If she thinks something is wrong. If a senior comes in asking for any amount. She will take them in the office and tell them. It is a banking law that she must know where the money is going. May not be legal. But she has saved some people from making a big mistake.

My mother tells the scammers. That she must have a Texas Ranger cosign for any large amount she takes out. She gets a lot of hang ups.

Im 75 years old and usually broke so the scammers cant get me.I always ask scammers to send me some money for beer. Our phone has caller id and it doesnt get answered if it says private number.I meet beggars in shopping mall parking lots once in a while.I offer to buy them some food, they always say no.I look out for my friends, others can take a hike.Theres a homeless shelter in a city 25 miles away.I notice they are better dressed than me and have cigarettes to smoke at 10 bucks a pack.

Not to dilute it, but this has been going for many years. Recall the "medicine men" that would sell "elixir" that did everything from make you taller to make you live forever? They were scammers just like the scammers of today.

LOU... any other family members to warn her?

May be a case like my dad (not been scammed, but...). And if you did work with him on stage years ago, he"s still headstrong and stubborn. He will get halfway into something, or hire someone, etc. before calling me. Now, we"re a very good tight-knit family that is always there for each other. I"m in the construction and design business, but has been several times in the past he has called a roofer or plumber or... to stop out an do some work. Without calling me first - even just to see if they are an ok company! "He doesn"t want to bother anyone..." Drives me crazy.

So... maybe she did this before she told anyone?

But could also be like the guy at dinner 2 tables over last night. Looked like he had taken his elderly mom out for her weekly dinner... but the way he treated her and talked to her, we finished ours and left so I didn"t have to go over there and smack him.

Ok... I"m done for now....
Keep up the music.

Tony

Lou,you are right to an extent, but today most people(parents-children)are lucky to see(or talk) each other in a month-months time even when only a few miles away.Just a observation.

At least with the medicine man you usually got a pretty good drunk off the elixir, but bourbon is cheaper and usually the same stuff.
