Spitting gas out of this marvel schebler.

sounds like the float is either sticking or needs a little adjustment--could also be the seat leaking--needs a little more tight applied--or the needle is out of whack--in order of probability --just a guess though.

Let me check again. It spits gas out onto the starter. I just put a new float in it thinking the same thing. The old one seemed kinda collapsed or dented in.

Earlier it had bouts of running great, but as I let her idle, she'd go back to sounding like a Johnny popper and spitting gas and smoking.

Trying to get that float a 1/4" off the gasket but maybe I ought to sink it a little deeper in the bowl?

Thought that was my problem today. No such luck. Loading manure yesterday, the float stuck on the 1020 Deere a couple of times. I whacked it with a pair of fencing pliers and straightened it out every time. Stopped at noon today to eat dinner. Went back out and something was running down the side of the engine. Thought GREAT,float's stuck,it's sitting in the barn, the way my luck's been going,I'll catch it on fire and burn the barn down. Nope, wasn't gas. Antifreeze. Not a bypass hose like I'd hoped. Blown head gasket. Just what I needed. Sure raised the spirits. And yes, that's sarcasm.

Dave,

If it's "spitting" out the intake, the carb just plain isn't your issue.

Sure sounds like a tight valve guide, broken valve spring, rocker, flat cam, etc., etc.

The only way the air flow can reverse is if it has pressure from somewhere. (Read: compression coming backwards out thru an intake valve for whatever the reason).

I'll get a compression check and get back with you guys on what's going on.

Once again, thanks fellas!

did you blast your carb bowl? i had a similar problem on my '62 2000...bowl looked clean but had a lining of scale that float would hang on...i sandblasted the whole carb and problem was solved.

I used my dremel tool with the wire wheel on the bowl and have it shining, but I did notice the hinges that hold the float pin where a little bent. It has me wondering now if they are binding or letting the float slide to far either way.

I'll get it sorted out.

By the way, I found that compressed air and old bronze wound guitar strings works well in cleaning the carb orifices.

All spark plugs were black and sooty, one of the cylinders with no compression was oily.

Now what???

Valve job or complete rebuild?
