adding 30w oil to diesel

Some people have added engine oil to the new ultra low sulfur diesel as extra lube for injector pump on older engines that use the fuel as lubricant- the engine oil is cheaper than the diesel additive. I know a guy that runs a diesel truck on mostly used engine oil. Some of the large semi tractors get the engine oil changed and the used oil is run through fine filters and then put into fuel tank- truckers say they note a bit better power and mileage. 30 weight non-detergent low ash engine oil has been noted to be used as a gas additive- and was in some IHC manuals at 1 cup to 5 gallons gas- and again as diesel additive for Roosamaster pumps. SO- a limited amount of 30wt oil in diesel for certain engines is known practice for various reasons. The oil would have more energy than diesel since it is composed of longer chain hydrocarbon and would give a bit of boost to engine. RN

same here; all oil change oil goes into field work tractor. loader tractor used in the winter has blended fuel year around; so it gets a pass. if i run out of used oil, then i mix 20% soyoil with any diesel!

I add a little 2 cycle oil to my Dodge diesel. I thought it ran quieter after burning that.

I have never heard of it being used in a diesel but seen some old times when I was a kid put a quart in a full tank of gas. They did it when they were going to work the tractor hard.

How much oil at $5.00 a quart do you want to add? LOL. Really that sounds like a fairy tale. I think the oil would reek havoc on your valves.

(quoted from post at 17:52:53 03/15/12) Has anyone heard of adding 30w to diesel to get better milage and power?
We put a cup of 2 cycle oil to a 20 gallon tank in the wifes KIA.... Skip a tank and it starts to tap a little, toward the end of the skipped tank it chatters. Add the oil at the next fillup and it almost immediately quiets. Runs smoother also but I don't drive it enough to check mileage...

Or Marvel Mystery Oil they actually market it for adding to gas, diesel and oil. Ratio's right on the bottle.

The human mind is an amazing thing.

I put a K&N filter in my old '97 Chevy and I could SWEAR it had 20HP more than before. I could SWEAR I felt it in the seat of my pants while driving.

After a few days, I realized it was all in my head.

I think that's the case with a lot of this.

Ever heard the saying... "the proof is in the pudding"???

You can be pretty aggravining sometimes.... But so can I... I guess......

not sure how old some here are but I have been running equipment for over 40 years and I can say that the "NEW" dsl fuel is very dry compared to the older fuel of years ago, while it( the new low sulfer) may work just fine in the current engines and injection systems the older ones ( like I run) need some lube as to mileage my 97 Dodge with a Cummins does get better mileage when adding oil, adding 2-3 gal of used oil to a 100 gals of dsl will get me 2-4 hrs more out of each tank on an average and there is a noticable differance in the way it performs, as to the commment at the bottom on my other post not sure what that means,, if you think I am stupid for this so be it I have done this for many years and thousands of running hrs and have never had a injection pump injector or valve failure, a major trucking company I know run millions of miles and they add every bit of their used oil to the dsl storage tanks no problem at all

Some people just like the idea of cheap fast easy gains in health by popping pills. Or they think they are saving thousands of dollars are year by pouring all manner of elixers, tonics, witch brews and snake oil into a fill hole. Go ahead if it makes you feel better. You are paying the bills.

Why don't you start your own web site with a Q&A forum where you could insult and degrade people on your own $.

I add a quart of non-detergent 30 or 40W to each tank on my old diesels for lubrication. I don't expect any mileage increase, just longevity.

Would you guys consider 1987 ford 6610 old enough for the quart of oil addition?

Does it smoke more?

I really can't see what you'd gain by adding oil to the fuel.
I'm running an old driptroit this winter that's taking somewhere in the neighbourhood of 1/2 qt per hour past her blower seals and burning it. I can't tell that it's added to it's fuel economy because it burns more fuel that a 3204T Cat of similar ratd power (that's making a good deal more power)... it makes a constant plume of smoke that only marginally clears off during a very hard pull... and I'd say it's probably 25-30% short of it's rated power.
The owner tells me it's done that for a long long time... so I guess we could sit here and say we've done that for years and it hasn't hurt a thing....
On the other hand... I've got various tractors and other machines here that have 20-30K hours combined use between them; all older engines. Not one has had a pump touched. Only one has had one injector changed and that was when it was 2 years old. Very seldom do I use fuel conditioner. Probably 90% of those hours it was just straight fuel.... So I think a very strong argument could be made that the fuel we get here is more than sufficient of it's own accord.
Your call what you do but personally I wouldn't make a point of using anything.
Logically... the fuel suppliers are not going to knowing put fuel out there that will damage an engine. The class action that would result from that would cost far more than a good additive package at the refinery will ever cost.

I burn it in a few pickup trucks and tractors. Mostly just to get rid of it. I doubt it gets me any better fuel mileage. I dump filtered used 30W motor oil in my diesel bulk tanks. No exact science in regard to ration. I suspect maybe I end up adding 20 gallons of 30W oil to 1000 gallons of diesel? It doesn't take much to turn all the diesel pretty black.

Years back, it was common practice for big rigs on the road to use discarded waste oil mixed with the diesel. But they had very rugged in-line piston injection pumps. Not the sensitive rotary/distributor pumps some LD cars and trucks have now.

I DO know it does little for adding lube to diesel. Two-stroke-cycle oil added at a 1 to 400 ratio does a much better job.

Before the days of emissions Cummins sold a lube oil blender. Its purpose was to mix oil with fuel at oil change time eliminating the need to dispose of the oil and you also got a few gallons of "free" fuel. I don't think anybody worried about it but there was no mention of adding any lubricity to the fuel. But, this was before the days of low sulphur fuels and nobody worried about it.
I have heard recently of people mixing clear hydraulic fluid to the fuel for lubrication. I do not know if this does any good or not.
