Ford tractor battery orientation.

I'm about finished rewiring my '58 641 and I really don't like having the battery with the post towards the front of the tractor. It puts that positive post really close to the fuel line that runs around the gas tank and over to the carb side.

I was wondering if anyone else turned the battery around with the post towards the back and ran a longer cable to the solenoid?

That's what I have in mind. I was wondering if there were any cons to that idea that I haven't thought of.

you can run battery any way ya want...the optimum starting amps with a 6 volt battery need the shorter cable...changing to 12 volts gives you some flexibility, but the shorter the cables, the better.

atteries are available with many different post orientations.

(quoted from post at 10:55:01 03/14/12) With all three of your responses, it's obvious I'm way UNDER thinking it.

Thanks!

If that tractor was mine, I'd do just exactly what you initially proposed. No need to over think or under think, just do it.

Think outside the box man. When I converted my
Farmall H to 12V I used a Delco- type battery with
side terminals pointed to the out side. That way if
I ever flipped it over the battery wouldn't short
out against the bottom of the gas tank. I might get
smushed but not burnt! Was a heck of a lot easier to
get to and allowed me to mount the battery solid to
the tractor I didn't have to take it loose to get to
the cables

Yeah, I think im going to be "out of the box" with what I'm about to do. I'm going to go ahead and replace the battery with the post to the rear but with the positive post towards the solenoid. Reason being is I want to run new fuel line and add an inline filter just outside the first sediment bowl and before the first turn back across the battery area. Which means I may have to add an inch or two of fuel line out over the battery. Wrapped and insulated for good measure none-the-less.

Can anyone tell me what size fuel line to ask for at the parts store?
