Massey 135 Update Pt 6

I took the advice that Jerry/MT suggested and I went back through the points/condenser. After a few tries I got her set at the .22 the manual calls for with my feeler gauge.

Installed everything and it fired up, fired up really well. The throttle worked perfectly fine as well and the tractor cut out on me after I hit 2000RPM after a few seconds.

Restarted the tractor and it likes to misfire through the air cleaner like it did before I replaced the spark plugs with the correct gap.

Jerry/MT suggested I jump the key switch to determine if it was bad. How do I do that safely?

I am planning on another post today showing how much fuel is coming out the carburetor bowl/fuel line at the inlet elbow later today when I get back home.

Any suggestions?

I think you mean you set the points to 0.022" not 0.22"! What does your spark look like? Pull the center lead out of the distributor cap, hold in near a good ground and try a start. You should see a FAT, BLUISH-WHITE SPARK the color of lightning. Do this! what do you see?

If the spark is good, then put a jumper wire between the battery connection and the battery side of the coil. MAKE SURE THE TRACTOR IS NOT IN GEAR and try a start. Let the engine run an see if it behaves as before. If it does, then the switch is not the problem. If it fixes the problem then the switch is bad.
If the problem still exists, check the firing order and the initial timing as well as the timing at high speed to make sure that the timing is not initially retarded and the centrifugal advance is working correctly. You"ll need a timing light to check the advance at high speed.
Rreport back on what you find. Eliminate igniton problems first and then work the fuel issue.

In the video the other day, It didn't sound like it was firing on all cylinders. Pull the plug wires one at a time while it runs and see if it makes a difference. May need new plugs, valves adjusted, ect. It also had an awful noise like a bearing locking up.

I have a IH 300 that has a rusty gas tank and chokes the gas flow. Mine has a glass sediment bowl so its easy to see the building rust. Try blowing air back thru the fuel line.

I gave her new Autolite 386s properly gapped. Ill do the wire trick. I tried to use my timing light but if the flywheel is spinning, how do you tell it's at the correct degree beyond TDC?
