Calling all old-timers.....Identify this!

A fuel ignitor of some sort....beyond that, I don't have a clue.

I'm 66 so I guess I'm a youngster here

Yeah, I remember those things! An add-on gasoline fired automobile heater. Never owned one like that myself, In the 70s I had one for a VW but never installed it.

Thats a southwind heater that uses gasoline. My first car was a 1947 Ford and it had southwind heater. It had a 1/8 copper tube that came from the carburetor feeding it. In 4 years it never gave me any problems.

My 1960 Corvair has one that is similar but a bit more modern. So did many of my air-cooled Volkswagens.

Lost In Space. That's the robot's computer bank. I must have seen Dr. Smith yank it out a thousand times when the robot drove around warning "Danger, Danger, Danger". I'd recognize it anywhere. How did I do?

Yep. Southwind gas heater. Robbed fuel from the gas line to the carb. Very warm, but like any gas heater was a CO producer. Dad and I put one in my 40 Ford Coupe. He told me, "If you park to spark, leave a window open". He77 in that coupe I had to leave a DOOR open for leg room :)
Figure you gotta be at least 70 to be in on this thread.

My dad had one in his 47 Ford when he was young, his buddy was warming his feet and melted the toes on his patent leather shoes.

I not 70 like the other poster said, but they still use a very similar heater to that today that runs on diesel for cab heat.

After I made my post that I had one in my 47 ford I went on ebay, there is a ton of them for sale there. Even some for airplanes.

68 works. Folks bought a 1941 Ford as a second car in the mid 50s- had a Southwind heater in it....I was 10 years old. Sister and I drove it to the other farm, 4 miles away, also down the road a quarter mile to cross the dairy cows from the pasture each day. Then older brother used it when he went to college, and summer jobs for a couple of years.

South Wind Heaters had an exhaust pipe that connected to the cars intake manifold.Doubt it would run with the engine off.Had one in a 38 Ford.

They will really kick out the heat. Had one in a'53 Jeep. As for useing one in an acft., first thing I thought of was "going down in flames".

When you "parked" with your girl in the winter the car wa always running for heat. And bow did Jack Frost also get busy.

I'm 52 and know what it is. However I mis-spent my youth commuting to Michigan State University in Air Cooled (and thus unheated) Volkswagens. Yes I know the heat worked when they were new but I never spent more than $300 to buy one. Thought I was moving up in the world when I got a '69 AMC Javelin till I found out the windows didn't seal real well and the heater was broken.

Had one in my 39 Ford 2 dr. Only problem I ever had was when I gave it to repairman to fix the ignitor he lost it and he never got me a replacement. Was a real good heater and didn't seem to affect gas mileage.
