Re OMC Mustang

Ok, I've got an update on the OMC Mustang 880. It is a Perkins deseal, with a Lucas CAV injector pump and double filter. We put a brand new pre-injector pump on it today. Not much help...We get the line blead up to the injector pump, use the starter to blead the lines to the injectors, and then get it to run for about 5 seconds, be fore it dies. The only thing we can do to make it run again, is to blead the line again. It basically seams that after runing for a few seconds, it burns out the fule past the filter, and cant get more. WHAT are we missing/not doing correct??

Collapsed rubber line (inside the fiber reinforcement)
Air leak into the line (holes often do not leak when stopped)
Charge pump not working when running
Put a different fuel supply into the charge pump and start it to isolate the issues. Jim

I vote for an air leak somewhere before the transfer pump. Cracked fuel line, cracked fittings, loose fittings. Maybe a deteriorated hose or pinched line. Air leaks won't always leak fuel either.

Check top of final filter assembly for a small line going back to tank, may be tied into injector return line. Most Perkins have a small bleed oriface on filter base, can be straight fitting or banjo bolt, may have bleed hole about .020 plugged. Is used to get air out of filter base so none gets to injection pump, will keep dieing out plugged. Not sure what size engine you have, but know 4.203, 4.236 and 248, and larger models use this bleed system.

May also need to check both filters, make sure no o ring seals are twisted and seal correctly. Same style filter base assemblies are on most MF tractors, have seen sometimes filter seals twisted, can cause either fuel leaks or air leaks, upper seal is slightly larger than lower. Please let us know what you find, hope it is not too serious.

Napa gives you more seals than needed, and yep there's two sizes. If you put the wrong seal in the top, it blocks off the fuel passage in the filter...you can get it to prime that way, but it won't allow it to run. We corrected the seal, and now it seams to run fine.
Now we fully understand why we don't own or want any diesels, and try to keep away from working on them!
