2004 duramax

Farm auction close by has 2004 chevy dually with duramax and allison 13500 miles, need to know if this was good year for the duramax and what it might be worth. miles are for real ,looks like new, and is a4x4 Thanks for your wisdom

I have one, 2500HD. Bought it new and it has been a good truck. I have 113,000 miles on, I know that isn't much. I usually pull a 20 ft flat bed trailer or a 14 ft dump.
Only issue I have had was just this month had the Fuel Injector Control Module fail which seem to not be a very common occurance.
I will warn you the speedometer reard low by about 3 mph.

You might get the VIN, and check with your local GM dealer to see how long the injectors are covered. If I remember correctly, the earlier 04's have the injectors covered until 200,000 miles. Mine is a later model 04, and the warranty expired @ 100,000 miles, thankfully mine needed replacing around 98000 miles, at that time the service manager said they were $350.00 each.

The LBZ engine code was the best engine ( '07 newer ). The '04s had issues with injectors and fuel lines I beleive. The Allison in that year was only a 5 speed as well. Maybe '06 and '07 for sure had the 6 spd.

The injectors are warranted to 200,000 miles, or X years from date of manufacture. I would check that out before buying one. The failures are fairly common.

As previously mentioned, gauges may be off a little, requiring a new gauge cluster which is 300-500 bucks. Injectors could be troublesome. They have a 7 year/200k mile warranty. The year part is 7 years from the build date of the truck. If worried about injectors, it may be best to buy a newer truck. Injectors were made external on 04.5 trucks but had 5 speed trannys. 05 had newer engine and 6 speed transmissions.

The early 04's had the lb7 which will eventually have to have the injectors changed to the tune of $3-4000. I think there had been a bit of success in using low micron filters and upgrading the water seperation system. Those are the two things that really contribute to the early death of them. With only 13,500 miles, you may simply be able to upgrade the filters and get good service life out of the injectors. I'm not sure what is all involved in that though, could be expensive. Far as I know the 5 vs 6 speed allison is simply double overdrive but I've never heard of an 06 getting better mileage than an 01-04 LB7. Seems the best mileage comes from the 01-04 models.
