Does anyone put salt water on the asparagus patch to keep down grass and weeds, and if so how much salt?. My grandmother used to do that and never had weeds or grass in her asparagus. Thanks for info.

We always dumped the water from the ice cream freezer on ours....time to make some ice cream! Asparagus is related to seaweed...salt it as much as the ocean.....

I use solar salt. The kind you get at Home Depot in the blue bag. Made for use in water softeners. Salt it down good and let it grow. Harvest as needed and let the rest go to seed. After the 1st frost and it's turned brown I set it on fire and let it burn up. I'm just outside Houston TX. Pretty good but not as good as the patch I grew up with in IA.

Thanks. Glad to read this topic! Took me four tries over several years to finally get some asparagus growing. Last year was the second year... and it is already weedy and using weed-preventers does not help much with quack grass. Was about ready to till it all under and call it a day with asparagus - but I will give salt a try instead.

Thanks folks.
SHMBO was sure salt would kill it, but remember my grandmother salting hers. Will get it salted today. Getting a few sprigs now.

Thank you to the original poster.

My wife read somewhere that rock salt was good for weed prevention in asparagus, but we were both a bit apprehensive about trying it. After reading this thread, I'm sure we will be salting our asparagus bed.

For what it's worth, we have also learned that asparagus thrives on fertilizer. Bunches of it. Way more fertilizer than you would think.

I use fine stock salt. Sprinkle it on until the ground is white, but not piled up. Keeps most weeds out for several months. May have to salt it more than once. Keeps both grass and weeds from growing.
