for information. What was the difference between the 4010 and 4020?The tractor had 4010 on tag and 4020 on the nose.So what was the big difference between the two? The gentleman said there was a kit to make them from 4010 to 4020 .How do I find that out? Would a 4010 be alright for 200 acres of farm work. How many times do you see duals on these tractors? Reason I ask is that someone has shorten the axles. There was two tractors I looked at. One had syncro trans the other had power shift.I liked the feel of the syncro tractor. It was the one that had 4010 on the tag and 4020 on the nose. Both seemed to run ok and drive .Thanks for reading BlaineF(WA)

There are alot of differences between a 4010 and a 4020, you cant make a 4020 from a 4010 with a kit, just increase the HP,I would go with a 4020 unless the 4010 was real cheap.

The only kit to make a 4010 to a 4020, was the overhaul kit. 4020 piston and sleeves were used in place of the 4010 piston and sleeves. There is discussion of this very same subject on the John Deere Forum.

All I can tell you is I had a real late 4010 Gas within the last 100 built that when I went to Deere for parts I had to take the engine serial# distributer# and the tractors serial#. I think it was a half and half tractor but it sure had the power and not bad on gas. It would pull 5x16s in 4th gear and keep right up with dads 1850 diesel pulling 5x16s in 5th gear. I ran T-rail duals on my 4010 and it dose help with flotation and it pulled easer with the extra traction. If he rebuilt it with a 4020 kit theres not much diffrence between the 4010 and an early 4020. Bandit

The axles are 3/3/8 on 4020,the pto on 4020 was
much improved, the three point was heavier, seems
like the 4010s had 85H.P. and 4020s 95H.P.Many
improvements.

I would go 4020 over 4010 any day. You will want duals for
cultivating, disking and planting. The wide axles on the 4020
work super for that.

one difference i found out the hard way, is the brake design. on the 4020, the pins that hold the plates from turning are held in a round hole. on the 4010, the pins set in a half circle. so if you spike the brakes hard on the 4010, the pins, being unsupported on the outside, can break off and fall down into the transmission, where they can get picked up by he gears and start breaking stuff. its quite expensive to fix, as i learned.

Nobody's mentioned the bull gears are wider in the 4020.
PTO speed's easier to change on the 4020. Force the change over on a 4010, it is splitting tractor for fix.
4020 came out with more horses. 4010 easily upped with change over power pack.
The 4020 is much more tractor than the 4010. Trick is treat them with respect and they'll work just fine for years.

The only kit would be an engine kit and that is not all of the differences between the two. The 4020s had several heavier gears in the transmission and rear end. The PTO system is completely different. An easy way to tell the difference between the two is the location of the PTO engagement lever. The 10 series where on the left and the 20 series is on the right.

If all else is the same the 4020 would be worth several thousand dollars more than the 4010. The seller is trying to steer you to the 4010.

That power shift thing has got me a little on edge. Are they a good tranny.Seems that all the gears work.Just a different deal I guess.Never been on one before .Always had standard trans. Thanks Guys. BlaineF(WA)

Blaine if you don't need a 3pt, I still have that 4020 LP sittin here....and the price of LP gas isn't bad right now......

One distinguishing difference between the 4010 & 4020 is that the pto stub shaft bolts on a 4010 with 4 bolts and pto shaft is held in a 4020 with a snap ring

What pins are you talking about because if its the one i am thinking about they hold the bull gear in place too.So if they was only half round than the gear would turn in the housing.Worked on many of them both and own one of each. Other than the pto shaft and lever i like the 4010 as much as i do the 4020.4010 have three reverse gears and mine will out pull and do better on fuel than the 4020.the pump drive is different on the 4010 too

The parts in the photo are identical for 4010 & 4020's.
