OT started on my thickness sander today

I found a plan for a thickness sander, so bought them. They were bragging about how cheaply it could be made! After opening the package, I find the unit is too small, and powered by your table saw. I want one over 24" wide, and it needs to be free standing with its own motor. SO, I now have plans that are mere suggestions! Never done anything like this, so it is all a steep learning curve! Got the drum mounted on the shaft, and got the cabinet mostly done today! Picture is from my phone, sorry for the quality!

I will be interested to see how it works out. Please keep us posted.
I built a wood lathe from scratch using old and found parts, it worked OK until I replaced it with a real factory built one.

I like to design, and build things. When I worked at my factory job I got to build several machines to do different operations in the mfg of printed circuit boards. Have fun with your project. Stan

We have a time saver at SCSU.
The key issues will be:
Feeding stock into the sander evenly and with
minimum thickness variation.
Multiple rollers under the pressure drum, or a
feed belt (250$) are needed to get good feed.
Uniform thickness side to side (adjustability of
the bed, or pressure drum is necessary. The bed
is easier in that the adjustment of the pressure
drum also wanders the belt.
Belt location (as on a 6" vertical belt sander is
the most difficult, and is performed with sensors
and servos on commercial machines. Jim

I've worked with 4' and 8'. sanders. The 4' use
4/150 hp motors for the sanding belts with 4
heads. 2 on top and 2 on the bottom. It also has
contact drums to feed the board. The 8' sander is
pretty same with 6/ 200 hp motors and 6 contact
drums.(sanding 8' x 24' boards) It takes 50 HP to
pull the board through that one. Sanding one side
will take less hp but with any sander the board
needs to be held firm to get an even sand. I have
no idea what it would be like to hand feed a
board. Possible kickback? And perhaps not.
