picked up my pigs today...a boar and two gilts, red wattle/ tamoworth crosses. Hope to be "high on the hawg" in 6 or seven months...I love me my pork, thank God every day for Jews and nnalert- more pork for me!
First real effort at "consumable livestock"- 12 horses on the farm, never raised an animal to eat until now.

WE got 4 of em given to us a few years ago. Now I'm raising at least 10 a year for ous family and for sale.

They are pretty easy. I have mine on a small pasture. Feed, shelter and water and they pretty much take care of themselves.

Good luck!

Oh gosh. It is so easy for them to.... turn into.. pets.... that's bad. Got to keep distant and - detached? Looks like you guys are off to a bad start!

I see trouble. Look honey I taught them to sit. They know there names, they come when I call, they"re so smart, We can"t eat them it would be like eating one of our dogs.
Get her away from them now!!!!

First calf heifer had twins so we took one off, decided to keep it and raise it, told the wife we will need one to butcher. She tells me "no way, I'm it's mother now" we're not going to eat him. Don't know what she thinks is going to happen to it when it's sold.

May as well start training them and making friends now.... I see at least one that ain't gonna be on the table unless it has it's own chair

Good luck.....

In our neighborhood, we had two brothers who lived a few miles apart. They'd each set aside a couple of pigs to fatten for their own consumption. The girls would turn them into pets, and then didn't want to eat them. The brothers would "trade" hogs with each other so the girls wouldn't be eating little Sooie. After all, one pork chop pretty well looks like another.

You'll enjoy having your own pork, and especially knowing where it came from.

#1: oldest daughter. Her attachment ends when she discovers she can"t ride them in competition
#2: only temporarily in this stall while I built the pen. This stall is reserved for those minature giraffes you"ve seen on TV...we"ve made a killing breeding and raising those. Russian gangsters love "em
#3: these are "eatin" animals"- if any one of these are still alive in a year, you"ll know I choked on a peice of pork from the first one.
