My cat eats well from the wood pile!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doubt it is the chipmunks. More likely termites or powder post beatles. Never heard of a chippie making sawdust. Cute little critters love sunflower seeds.

i think i would go with insects and things also myself., might be time to have some fun with a pellet gun though!

I think your chipmunks are feasting on the bugs that are causing the saw dust. They are probably nibbling on the wood to get to the bugs.

I think you may have nailed it Dave.
I find evidence of powder post beetles sometimes in my wood piles; mostly in Ash and Red Maple that was dead when I cut it and was on the verge of becoming "punky".
I sometimnes find mouse nests in my wood piles as well.
I also find snake skins in various sizes indicating to me they are thriving there!
Well, I guess if I was one of dem varmits and somebody set me up with a place easy to hide in and kept it covered so I wouldn"t get wet, I"d move in too!

Ash trees? Firewood? Ever heard of Emerald Ash Borer?, a bug that lives under bark on dead trees and destroys ash trees. They figure they'll have to cut millions of ash trees here in Wisconsin to avoid the spread of the bug. My friend in Michigan who makes snow shoes and dog sleds has switched to hickory because there aren't any ash trees left over there.

wisbaker,
Why,...... I certainly have heard of the emerald ash borer!!
Fortunately, it ain't got to my part of NYS yet.....
As far as I know, anyway!
The D.E.C. started hanging these funny little traps high in the ash trees last summer so I assume they think it won't be too long 'til they get here.
Ash is so prevalent where I am it grows like a weed. Very decent firewood and replenishes itself rapidly.
I hate to think it may go the way of the Chestnut and Elm.
BTW, I have some pretty nice sized Elms on my property although I do lose one now and again.
I am familiar with powder post beetles and have seen their work for years and years.

I've never seen Chipmunks make chips......
now you got me wonderin' how did they get the name CHIPmunk?
I hope you let us all know what's causing the problem when you do find out!!

the "chip" part prolly comes from that irritating chirping sound they make when they're warning everything that you are in the woods.

I always have a chipmunk or two in my woodshed every year. But the indicators are nests,....and not wood chips. Are the wood chips in a nest like setting, or is it all over the place as well as sawdust?

It feeds on the live cambium layer of the tree until they have completely girdled the tree, thus killing it. Once the tree is dead or almost dead the EAB move on because they need to feed on live tissue. Once firewood is dried out then there really isn't any worry of EAB.
