New Cub Cadet Mower

I need a new mower and thought the cub Cadets looked decent at Home Depot. They have them with 48" cut and a Koler engine for around $1600 - 1800.

Any experience with these mowers? I'd rather have a zero turn or a true Deere, but do not want to spend $5,000+ to mow my yard.

You're not spending $5000 to mow your yard. Your spending an extra $3000 for a better machine which will elimanate much of your trimming, it'll save you an hour or more in time which you can now do something enjoyable and it save you turning around time which is another .5 hours x all the times you mow and I'd venture to say that you'll save at least 100 hours per year;not to mention less wear and tear on a machine and the zero turn will outlast the other by twice or more. So...you want to save a few bucks or save a lot? Save a lot and buy the zero turn.

I'm with Bo. I mow 2.5 acres of lawn, took me 1hr 50mins with my hydro john deere tractor with a 5' cut. Mowed like that for 10 years.

4 years ago bought a JD 757 zero turn, 5' cut. I easliy mow the lawn in 1 hour, if I rush can do 50 mins. Here in the South the mowing season is LONNNNGG. Not sure how many times I mow a year,,, but lets just say I got back many hours.

It was expensive, but the life expectancy is 2,000 hours, 4 years and I'm at 220 hours on the meter, machine runs like new.

Forget the new Cub's all made by MTD - pieces of tin - take some time and look around for a good old Cub - ones made by IH - you can pick up a good one with a mower deck from 500 to 1500 - will last a lot longer than something you buy today out of a box store. Walk over via the net to IHCUBCADET.com

I have been using the cub cadet LT1050 for seven years. It runs like new and I cut a large lawn. Yes, I would prefer a zero turn but the cub cadet and I guess many others will do just fine (but not as fast).

I read these posts and I have wonder just how much better a Deere really is.

I had a 1992 MTD hydro with a 46" cut that I paid $600 for in 1998. I mowed 2-5 acres and sold it to my brother in 2002. He's still using it to mow about 2 acres every summer. So if a cheap POS will last 18 years and still go strong who has lived long enough to know how long a Deere will lasts that costs more than twice as much?

I guess I forgot to do my math - the cheap POS is already 20 years old - if it starts again this spring. Brother laughs at me for the deal he got for $400.

Deere, Cub Cadet, ect, all have $1800 "big box mowers" and they have $5000 "garden tractors". I've owned several older Cadets (682 and 782 mainly) I've had Deere, right now I have a 3 year old "new" Cadet GT2550. The new ones aren't the warhorses the older ones were. Still, not a bad mower SO LONG AS YOU DON'T TRY TO USE IT LIKE A 100HP TRACTOR.... I bought the 2550 at an estate auction with intent to resell. I cut my grass 2 times and sold my Deere. There's a lot to be said for "new".

I purchased a new 1050 last year and it does a great job. The only thing I don't like is mine has a very sharp turning radius and it tears up the yard when you go around trees, so I widen my turns. Otherwise good machine.

I just bought a 1050 with the Kawasaki motor. Does a very nice job cutting and sips gas compared to my older smaller Toro. I would agree on the tight turns tearing the lawn a bit. Just had to get used to it. I would buy another one.

Ya know what? Do what you want to do with the budget you have and enjoy cutting your grass as you like! Bottom line is that you just take good care of that Cub Cadet like it is a new car and it will do you just fine. A Kholer engine is good.

Just a question for you guys with the zero turns.I have been running a Dixon zero turn for years. I love the speed. It's a mowing machine. But, every tree in my yard and everything else I go around has a skid mark around it. It doesn't seem to matter how careful I am. Do you guys have this problem? I have been wondering about the John Deere 4 wheel steering. I read in consumer reports a few years ago that the Deere would turn almost as short and didn't cost much more.

Why not cut that 2.5 acres with a 108 inch mower? A 9 ft sickle mower on a Farmall H. You could probably mow in road gear , throttle way back and do it in 20 minutes.

every residental grade riding lawn mower in the use is made by MTD. the cub cadet zero turn I bought last year is EXACTLY the same as the deere and the mtd other than paint. find the model you want, then ignore the color and by the one with the cheepest paint, ( for me, cub cadet on sale)

Ive got a 1050 with the kohler motor. It does okay as long as the grass doesnt get away from you. I have had to have some welding and reinforcement around the spindles on the deck and have replaced the bushings on the steering shaft. It was a cheaper modle but I would say it is worth what I paid for it.

I got the 50" RZT zero turn Cub for 3K, I think it was worth every penny. As I got older I became tired of working on old mowers and it cut down my mowing time drastically. This season will be year 6 with it.

I wouldn't be afraid of buying one of the conventional riders. If you keep it shedded and maintained there can be a lot of life in them.

Our local Welding Shop guys, mow yards after work. They bought 2 Cub Cadet Zero turns I think 54 in. They are consumer models. They do nothing but brag on them. But they have bought big commercial Skags, for this year. They think if you are only going to mow your own yard, they are good enough. I've got one of those over priced JD's. and I love it. Vic

You get what you pay for. Cub Cadets are nothing but MTDs painted yellow and white. They use to be excellent mowers. They are run of the mill after MTD bought them.

The JD LA lawn tractors (box store) aren't built by MTD. I am not saying they are better than the CC but there are few similarities between the two.

You must have taken good care of it for it to have lasted that long. Most of its sisters and brothers died long ago. I have had several different lawn mowers over the years. Many of them are good mowers. The main reason I have had JD the last twenty years or so is PARTS. Plus the decks do a real nice job mower in tough conditions. I have tried to fix some of the cheaper brands for people and could not find the parts or even a dealer that would sell the parts. The Internet has helped but it is still a pain at times.

have a old hydro 125 cub, each year i have to fill up tire, grease the zerks, and away i go..bought it over ten years ago, haven't done anything to it, [wait] i changed oil once,,lol

Bought a 42 in model last year & I like it. It replaced a 48 in Snapper but it's twice as fast so I save a bunch of time & money. The Snapper is only 40 years old so I gave it to my son.

Back in 1992 Deere's cheapo's were the LX series. Likely cost more then MTD and were FAR better made. I've had both and if you can find an old LX Deere that was cared for it will still be a good mower. Kawaski engines, greasable deck spindles you can just plain out mow an MTD.
