Well I went and brought another load of old Farmalls back to Pa. My wife says I am addicted to junk collecting. We finally found a sensible trucker who back hauls for $500 a unit from Texas. That is 1500 miles for $500. Do you suppose there is any market for a couple of nice straight old Farmall 400 LP tractors these days? They both have the propane heads on them.

It's the 450 head and manifold that has high value. There may be a few very late 400's with the same castings but I doubt if you will be that lucky.

Anyway, there should be some interest in LP tractors in PA. I am in MA. My W400LP is the only LP tractor I have seen in New England.

Several years ago, I backhauled a Diamond T from CA to CT. I got $1000 which comes out to the same cost per mile. It made sense to me.

Lol,sensible trucker?Soon to broke trucker, you better take advantage of him while you can.Diesel@400.+,all the other expenses,do the math.

I don't know what math truckers use, but if you made your money on the trip to Texas, why wouldn't you take a backhaul? It is all free money at that point. As far as the 400 heads IH started using the LP head about half way thru the 400 production run. Believe me I learned the hard way
what an LP head looks like.

Your post is confusing, you say a "load"and then say $500 a unit and then $500 for 1500 mi.,so is it $500,1000,1500 or $2000 or more for the trip.Makes a lot of difference.Sounds like you are a Jockey and want to make money on someone elses back. You sound like someone that would go up to someone(you might know who they are) at a sale and ask them if they have any room left to get their piece on and then have to go out of your way to take it to them and then they hand you a $20 or $50 bill and say that should be enought as you had to make the trip anyway.I have had it happen a couple times and I wasn't expecting $1.50-$2.00 a mile fee,but them offering .10-.20 or less a mile rate and havening load and unload the piece plus the Ins.There are NO free miles as you think.Sorry, maybe you caught a bad day but there are too many people that seem to think your way.

First let me say that the $500 is per tractor or car or truck. What difference would it make though if it was one or two or three units. If the
trip down is a money maker and if they only haul 1 unit back aren't they offsetting the total cost? Perhaps it makes more sense to lay over for a couple of weeks looking for that high paying return freight haul. Like I said hauling rates confuse me.

Maybe a more polite answer for you.Empty truck=less law scrutiny plus no cargo Ins.liabilty in case of unfore seen.So you need to be at least making a little bit.In your case,no on 1 or 2,maybe yes on 3 because you are still only paying for fuel + food.Unless that man has to come back to Pa.now(fixed run) he is taking a risk, but if he is happy, then OK.Ins.agent put the Ins.part to me and showed how it was sometimes cheaper to deadhead then run the risk of a lost leader costing a lot more.
