Just read this book, writen in 50-60's about the Hammer faimly from Scale Mount Illinos. Great little read, lots of period pics of life on the farm. Reminded me of my own life/childhood.The author was Archie Lieberman. He was a photo jounalist for look magazien. Bruce

Bruce, I am in my sixties and have the book "Farmer Boy" given to me by my Grandma when I was around 6 or 7 years old. My now grown son always loved that book when I read it to him. He has a "NEW" baby boy and found my old book for reading to my first grandson. I was very pleased with his choice. I still like the book also.

Tried to find out more about the book and folks in the story on the internet. Was saddened to read that the main character,Billjr had died at the tender age of 48 or 9. Worked himself to death, would be my guess. Bruce

my wife bought it for me from a local farm's 'craft' shop about 10 years ago. Ive read it thru about 3 times. Great book about America and families. The son Bill is about my dad's age, I was born in 1962.

the town is scales mound. it is in jo daviess county il about 30 miles of the crooked roads you can find from me.
scales mound is on the stage coach road or trail
between chicago and galena il in the early to mid 1800's.
it is a small town i think less than 500 people live there.

It was required reading for me in 5th grade. I haven't re-read it since then, but I still remember bits of it vividly. Specifically the oxen named Gee and Haw (I remember my teacher explaining the in-joke) and the maple syrup candy. I might have to pick it up again, thanks for reminding me of it.

Oops, sorry Bruce. I just realized that you're talking about a different book with the same title. I was thinking of the Laura Ingals Wilder book that takes place in NY in the 1860s (and it looks like several others did too) :)

I read them when I was a kid in school and just reread them a couple of years ago. I think I enjoyed them more now that I'm in my second childhood.

The oxen are only going to learn what you teach them, so why could you not use ... right and left. You could teach your dog to come to you by saying ... go away.

Wont work with my dog,he knows many words. You can spell the word out and he knows what you mean.Gee and Haw are the terms used here.Ive trained calves to work as oxen and have worked around them.Cattle know their names. You can drive 30 cows into a tie up and all will go to their own stall. My dog loves to ride and will go to the car or truck on command. If he sees me pick up my check book or make a shopping list he gets excited and runs to the door.If I say go away to my dog he will put his ears down and sulk and look very sad.

Is this the same Hammer that had a repair shop and sold simpilcity garden tractors. There was a small airfield behind his shop.
