Hello! can anyone give me any advice on how to take off with this trans in the higher gears say 4th gear high side ??? any info will helpful
thank you

Are you asking how one would start from a stop in fourth gear overdrive?

If so, you cannot expect to do so unless you are on level ground and have no load attached to the drawbar.

Would you expect to start your car or truch from a stop in high gear?

The Sherman has to be shifted with the tractor stopped. The main transmission can be shifted from 3rd to 4th while moving, without grinding, with a little practice. Start in 3rd overdrive, then shift to 4th.

REALLY! NO KIDDING ? Well that explains it, I new I would get the right answer from this forum. Thanks so much

The 3 speed sherman I had in my TO 30 could be shifted on the go. It was fun to drive on the road, start in 4th low and then shift the sherman up thru the gears. That was a really nice tractor to run.

Not true.

The Sherman transmission is little different than non synchronized automotive transmissions of the 1930s

Using common sense, the Sherman can be shifted on the fly. I have been doing it for 40 years or so.

Used to shift my dads 8n this way: Start out in 4th gear-direct get it rolling good, back the throttle down to 1/2, clutch, shift sherman into high, release clutch and open the throttle back up. OH!... and hang on! LOL!!!

Thanks guys thats what i was looking for. Got a parade coming up that i was asked to drive it in and it covers approx 30 miles round trip i dont know if the parade will move that fast but it is possible it is all trucks and tractors for a K/O/C charity thanks again!

That's what we always did on the 8N I grew up on. I'd start in 4th low, then shift the Sherman to direct, then to high. We never had any problems doing that. I'd always back the throttle down at the same time I hit the clutch. It sounded just like shifting a truck or car--especially since the tractor did not have a muffler!
