5th wheel in pickup

Looking at a pickup with a 5th wheel draw bar in the box. It is a Cattz, Rollmaster II 15K 5th wheel hitch. Want to pull my goose neck trailer with two WD 45s on it. Is it strong enough for that or do I need to have a ball put in. Trailer can be used as a 5th wheel or a ball.

Just curious, what makes a 5th wheel better than a gooseneck? I've never pulled a 5th wheel, but I know for fact I'll never pull a bumper trailer if a gooseneck one is available.

To answer the question, if you can find a 5th wheel flatbed, I'm thinking 15K would cover the 2 tractors and trailer ok.

have a fifth wheel set-up in my truck, also have a goose-neck 26ft'er to pull tractors,,i took out the ball sleeve and put in the pin sleeve so i can hook my g-neck just as fast as i hook up my r-v... no guessing on where the coupler is in case you can't see in the bottom of bed...

aaron: the only difference between a 5th and goose is the coupling devices, a g/n hooks onto a ball system mounted in the bed, gvw can vary, a 5th is just easier to hook-up with about the same gvw depending on the hitch..as stated on my other reply, have 5th for both trailers for easier hooking up. it's all in the preference of the person..

I've never seen a trailer with a convertible hitch that could be a gooseneck or a 5th wheel. What brand?

Usually the 5th wheel can be removed from the truck and it will leave the mounting rails. They make gooseneck plates that mount to these rails.

I suppose it'd be easy to switch. My flatbed is a gooseneck with the traditional ball. The ball pipe is adjustable up and down probably a foot or better. I could put a 5th wheel in my truck and put the pin on my trailer. The gooseneck ball can (in my opinion) take more side to side flexing. I load hay and drive through some pretty uneven ground and I think a 5th wheel only flex's front-back where the GN will flex through the entire 360 degrees of the ball.

I have a reese 5th wheel hitch and it has side to side tilt--bought it because i did a lot of beach camping with my fifth wheel camper (15000 Lb)and it was great on the uneven beach sand.

Goose neck by law you have to have safety chain but a 5th wheel no chains need plus you can also pull trailer with people in it with a 5th wheel but you can not do so with a goose neck. Also goose neck has a weight limit of 30,000lbs but a 5th wheel the limit is the hitch and you can if you want to pay for it get 5th wheel hitches good for 80,000 plus. The reason you see 5th wheels on the big rigs are because they are safer for heavier stuff but do not do as well in ruff ground like a field and such

Like Old says, 5th wheel is safer. There"s a reason all the big rigs use it, and why it requires no safety chains. A ball is no more secure than a bumper hitch ball, it"s just better placement of the weight.

A little different take on it.Those camper fifth's are not really made to pull heavy commercial trailers do to their ???frame mountings and heights above the frame level. The bigger fifths are at frame level.I have 3 different hitchs that go on each of 3 trucks,a 50,000# ball,50,000 fifth and a 25,000# camper fifth which I wouldn't use except to just move a trl.with.I know of a few that tryed it but something either broke or started bending.Your call and your money.
