Have a '59 John Deere 440 Crawler ... have the final drive off of the left side and I want to remove the quill so I can replace the oil seal. Does anyone have a clue how to get the left quill off? It doesn't appear there are any threaded holes to push it off... I assume there are dowel pins involved... I have pried and pushed on everything I could and as hard as I dared...Maybe have to take the top cover off and drive it from the inside? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I got the quill off... trick was to remove all the bolts AND the bolts from the surrounding housing, then pry the surrounding housing loose. Had to loosen and block the frame away from the tractor at the footwell to make clearance. The outside diameter of the quill and the inside diameter of the housing are very close and had to fight with it a bit to get it loose, but it eventually gave up. Be ready to catch some oil...
