tef engine knock

tef 20. noticeable heavy knock at low revs. worse when cold. New shells, pistons, rings e.t.c. 4 x con rods replaced as no1 was bent.originals were pressure fed. replacements were splash fed. crankshaft reground as rear main was bad. timing spot on. injectors good. tappets e.t.c. set correctly. head and sump off. cannot find any sign of trauma or play anywhere. only normal running in marks.Hard to tell whether coming from front or rear of engine although it sounds to be more of a crankcase issue than a combustion related thing. cracking the injector pipes one by one makes no odds to the knock. totally baffled as to the cause.

I once drove my self nuts looking for a bad knock,,,, and in the end found a timing gear that was missing a few teeth. The knock was when the gap passed where the gears mesh. (if 1 more tooth was missing it wouldn't have run)

Were the new shells drilled for pressurized oil? if not the oiling could be blocked radically. Even passage of oil to the upper end could be compromised. Just guesses, but shells need to be identical or modified to be identical. Jim

The big end shells had the necessary hole in them to supply pressure fed gudgeon pin but as I replaced with splash fed gudgeon pin arrangement this was rendered redundant. The small end bushes were drilled with an extra hole to allow for the small oil reservoir. Ive had the sump off and opened the big ends. I couldnt detect any small end play. The timing chain gears will be checked out. Oddly enough the noise seems to more or less disappear when the engine is up to full temperature and/or taken above idle. Could The ring pack be a bit tight or lacking in splash lubrication at low revs when cold? Cant see it causing a knock though. Ive heard of some of these rebuild kits not allowing enough oil to the rings. In fact someone recommended leaving the lower oil control ring out of the engine altogether as it would allow better liner lubrication with no effect on oil consumption. Anyway thanks for your replies, I'm going to pull the crankshaft and pistons now and have a closer look at things.
