need mill education

can someone explain to me what the difference is between the burr mill, hammer mill, and grist mill? how do they work and what does each produce? thanks, there just arent any mills around here.

A hammer mill beats the grain, till it fits through a screen, A burr mill has cam rollers, that are set a certain distance apart, more cracks grain than grinds it. A Grist mill, uses 2 stones, to crush and abrade the grain into flour. Those are my definitions, by experience, and observation.

I agree with Dave. Me my self I use a small hammer mill to take the soiled hay from my goat pen to make mulch for my garden. By doing that I help slow down the weeds and also fertilize at the same time

thanks guys, i guess the mill that we used to take our rice to for milling must have been a burr mill as it had rollers and would take the shell off the grain and the surface and would result in bran, and clean grain.

The first one is for milling burrs, the second one is for milling hammers and the third one is for milling grists.
