Good Winter Project

Recently I went to Fastenal and picked SAE and a metric thread pitch tools. So today I went to work sorting out a 5 gallon pail of totally mixed bolts I had up in the haymow.

Fine thread, course thread, carriage, specialty, SAE, metric....

Pretty slick little tools, each about the size of a finger nail clipper make order in a hurry.

While I have pretty well stocked indexes in the shop, every now and then I find myself serching through my "haymow" bucket. Now they are much better organized.

A really good job to have done.

I sorted out a bucket like that this winter too, and it has made a big improvement in how quickly I can find what I need or determine that I don't have it. I didn't have a tool so I just did it by eye, and I know I made at least a few mistakes.

Like any project, you have to have a plan. About 4 years ago I went thru a 30 year collection of bolts, nuts, washers, etc. Sorting was easy(been a toolmaker for 35 years), but having a cabinet ready for the sorted parts with drawers labeled was the important part. Then all you have to do is keep it that way. Only took three weeks, probably already saved that much time and took the rest to the scrap yard.
