97 kia sportage 4x4 frt end noise???

Hey folks,
The ??? may have a generic answer... Bought my little kia about 3 years ago with automatic hubs (mechanical and not the vacuum) that had a habit of leaving you in a jam.... Put manual locking hubs on and cured the problem. Been good about remembering to unlock them before getting on the road but forgot today. Something didn't feel just right but I was running late and had just came out of a bunch of mud & thought I just may have something outta balance. Hit about 60 mphand the rumble (??) didn't stop and I realized I didn't unlock the hubs. Unlocked them and all is well.... Was that a normal thing, or should it have still been smooth even when locked in???

Thanks, Dave

ours would do that if it did not have a matched set of tires on it and we did have some front wheel bearing trouble

Every pickup-vehicle we've ever owned or I've operated at work unless designed as a full time 4 wheel drive has had differing degrees of front end noise especially at high speed. Had several pickups we operated long after the noise started that never failed. If 4x4 is used as a get out of trouble, non daily operation, low speed feature then IMHO I wouldn't sweat it. If you've got low speed shart turn clicking and grinding then I'd be concerned.

Should be fine then.... Gotta do the frt brakes when the weather is better, prolly should clean/pack the wheel bearings also....... Axle shafts (CV) are fine and there is no chattering. No noise when unlocked and nothing noticeable until 30 mph or so.....

Did you hurt it? I don't think so. What is the
noise? My theory is with the hubs in you're spinning
everything in the front end, one the COAST side of
the drive line. On my 83 Ranger Ford recommended
running around a few miles each month with the hubs
locked in to splash oil around and lubricate stuff.
I ran around with 'em locked in most of the winter
(in Upper Michigan 6-8 months) didn't seem to mess
up anything, used more gas and put more wear on the
front end but it was better then being stuck.
