OT Sorta, Has to do with Ethanol/Gasoline Motor Fuel

Was just wondering, when all the midwest and elsewhere corn gets to the ethanol distillers and becomes distilled grain alcohol.

What is the proof?

Secondly, is the water affinity of ethanol/gasoline as severe as is JD Black, Or Evan Williams Black, or Ezra Brooks Black?

Just wondering. Lots of alkie being brewed that could easily get lost, even if big brother IS watching. Grin.

Real close to 200 proof.

It has to be denatured right real quick, by adding 1% or so of gasoline, like right real quick about coming out of the column, so none can go 'missing'.

Driving by the plants sure has a nice 'fresh bread baking' smell tho.

Ethanol for blending with motor fuel must be anhydrous - ie. 200 proof (only a trace of water is permitted). JD Black, etc. are pretty tame by comparison(!)

To discourage its diversion and "loss", motor fuel ethanol must be denatured by adding 1% to 2% gasoline at the point of production.

For more see ASTM spec #D4806 - 11a "Standard Specification for Denatured Fuel Ethanol for Blending with Gasolines for Use as Automotive Spark-Ignition Engine Fuel".

A couple of days ago when I was in a farm store I saw a product in a bottle that claimed to "cure all engine problems caused by ethanol". Huh? Jim

Claimed is the key word.

I sorta thought they would have their bases covered, beins there is a thing called human nature and all. Ha!

But surely there are accidents and some of it gets spilled....accidentally into a sanitized bucket somewhere along the line. Grin.

Just havin a lil fun.

Someone is always selling snake oil for something as you will not have any problems using ethanol we have been using it for 25 pluss yrs and it just works fine

Ya, I just had to chuckle when I saw those bottles. They probably put the same stuff in bottles labled to cure ingrown nails and baldness.

I too have used ethanol almost trouble-free for as long as it's been available around here and I suppose that's in the 25 year range. Jim

Ethanol fuel is as close to pure as you're going to get. It is not possible to distill ethanol to more than 96 percent pure (192 proof).
