Chevy Truck Mods Questions

I have a 2002 Chevy 2500HD. It is a crewcab 4x4 with 6.0 gas engine. It has 106000 miles. Was thinking of installing a K&N style air intake and an aftermarket engine computer chip. Looking for a little more power but more interested in helping the gas mileage. I know it isn't going to be great but just want to do a little better.

Please only comment if you have any experience with these things. And don't tell me to sell it, buy a diesel, or get a Ford or Dodge. None of those things are going to happen. Just paid it off and plan to keep it a while. Thanks.

I have a 2004 2500HD 4x4 with a 6.0L and 4:10 gearing. I installed a K&N filter and noticed maybe a 1 mpg increase (mostly hwy pulling 16' enclosed trailer). Didn't notice any change in how the truck runs.

A good friend has a 2005 w/3:73 gearing. He installed the filter, headers, and a chip and claims a 2-3 mpg improvement. He says the truck has better low end.

i've got a 2000 6.0l. The K&N cold air filter/box did help,(a little power and mpg) But the hypertech programmer didnt seam to make much difference, other than adjusting my speedo for bigger tires. there may be other programmers now that will help, but I'm not sure. Now its my daily driver, I've got an 8.1 for towing.

my 2001 2500hd ext. cab w/6 l. got 2 mpg better (from 13 to 15) after I installed Bosch spark plugs, the kind that have 4 electrodes & are non-adjustable. Pricey at $50 for 8 but Bosch guarantees 2 mpg or your money back. just my 2 cents.

I have a '97 F-150 with the 4.6 V8 gas. I put
a K & N cold air induction on it and average about 3mpg increase over what I got with stock system.

The K&N filter wont help much, unless you put a bigger exaust, but it will help. A prgrammer isnt going to do much either, since its a gas engine. On my wifes 01 Lesabre, on the last tuneup, I put E3 plugs in it. Based on the bank statements, I noticed she was going a day or two longer between fillups. Not saying they work, but several people have told me they got better milage as well. Unfortunatley we didnt have the car long after that so a real good comparison isnt going to happen. Also headers and true dual exaust will help, as well as undersized pulleys.

i run k& n filters in my trucks, on my dodge i started with just the filter, and got a slight increase in milage [ it was already pretty good] but what really made the difference in milage 3 to 4 mpg, was swapping out the whole air intake system to the k& n free flow style, also if you can swing it add a good set of dual exhaust to help the engine breath 2 1/2 inch or 3 inch pipe on a 6.0 the old 2 inch common dual system will help up to about 350 ci, but beyond that you need larger pipes to let the system breath

Already got 2 1/2" dual exhaust. It sounds good too. Wife doesn't like it though.

I was going to buy the whole intake system-not just the filter. Thanks for the info.

Before you spend the big bucks on that aftermarket intake system, take time to to inspect the original, stock system. That big plastic box that contains the air filter has multiple obstructions and devices that are there for the sole purpose of making things QUIET, but those devices also impede the flow of air. They CAN be removed without compromising the functionality of the air filter.

I put a k&n intake, throttle body spacer and chip into mine imoroved the mileage by about 4 mpg or so depending on how I'm driving ands seems to have more power. Seems like the combo of the intake and throttle body spacer did more together then alone and more then the chip.

The truck forums are saying the 69 buck chip is a swindle. My son paid off his 2006 GMC a year ago.Engine crapped the bed at 135000 miles. The flex plate cracked and antifreeze filled one cylinder. This seems to be a common problem with big GM v8s.I would trade them in fast.
