Generator charging troubles

I have a 12 volt Delco 2 brush generator setup on my old michigan loader. Couple of days ago it quit charging. I have used old John T's generator troubleshooting blurb and can't figure this one out.

Battery is good as it took a charge from a bench charger. Still starts the machine with no problems.

Generator works well when I try to motor check it. Spins it over with the belts loose but still dragging. When I ground the field terminal I get no output. When I ground the field and jumper the batt to arm I still get no output.

I am about ready to go buy an alternator but would like to know whats wrong before I go replacing things.

Harvery Bros. in Galesburg. Those guys are quick and good. I walked in today with a starter off of my 620 and Gary walked up and said "john deere 620?" I have no idea how he knew that. Cant be like they work on 10 of those everyday!

If you indeed do have a connection between battery and the battery terminal of regulator,(could have broken wire or poor connection) and then ground the fields, connect arm terminal of gen to batt terminal of regulator, still no charge, your generator is no good. You will note that a generator will motor with out the field wire grounded so this tells you that you could still have a fault with the field windings, no charge but will motor.

Could be a genny field problem

When you motor test it FIRST start with the Field jumped to frame ground IT SHOULD SPIN saying the brushes and armature and bushings are decent at least..........

Then if you remove the field off frame ground it should speed up saying the fields are at least connected

HOWEVER if it onlyyyyyy spins well with the fields ungrounded ID SUSPECT A GENNY FIELD PROBLEM

Thanks for all your help everyone. I did read that in the procedure... now I understand it.

I think taking it up to galesburg is out. When you look at the economics of the whole situation fixing a generator or replacing a 50 dollar regulator is not wise when I can buy a delco 10si for 40 bucks. I am not looking for the OE look on this machine just something that works.

Now the question is how hard is it to get a 10si mounted on a waukesha block. This is the same motor from an oliver 880.
