steering column

Allis Chalmers WD - - steering column seems to be "jamming" or "catching", as though the u-joint passing between the frame rail and the engine block is being interfered with - - although I can't find any obvious points of contact - - any suggestions as to what the problem might be? solution?

Maybe the U-joint is toast?

What rusty said plus a worn out "bearing" fwd of the u-joint. Bad combo. BTW- AC joint was $140 some years ago- try auto parts store, check if both yokes are same dia shaft. I think they are both 3/4. Might find a rebuild kit. Cross kit from AC is 224890.
