Case IH 4694

Looking at a Case IH 4694 (Case 4690) that has what I think is the Case 504 motor in it. What sort of reputation do these motors have and do they have sleeves?

504 has sleeves. I went thru two bad overhauls of the 504 in my 2470, then installed a Cummins 855, in the late 90s. Not easy, had to get an adapter plate made, lengthen the frame, make a new front mount. Still runs fine now. It"s the white one in this photo.

You make me nervous! Everyone has told me beware of the 4 wheel steer.. but I am well versed in electronics, relays and such, I'm not extremely concerned there. Should I be?

I wouldn't touch one personally. Worked for a guy that had a 4690 the steering was poor most of the time and nonexistent with the lights on after dark. Was a pain to service and not much fun to run like any other case tractor I have ever been on.

They are good engines except that the counter bores where the sleeve orings sit are prone to erodsion, but there is a fix for it you have to machine out the damage and install a repair sleeve made out of stainless, there is a special tool to do this that few dealer had.

i had a 4690. brought it over from canada. i bought in real nice shape and never really had any problemes with it. i ran it till she was tired. chopped and disked with it for about 10 yrs. paid about 12g for it. had new tires and 20g worht of new planiteries on it. when i traded it and i got 12g back on trade for a nh tm190. they had trouble selling so they took it to the auction in senaca falls after the farm show and bought it back for 3g. used to pack hay for a couple more months didnt tell the dealer i bought it though but they were upset for what it brung. traded it for a 7200 gal bodco tanker spreader and they took it to the same auction next yaer and wathced it sell for 5500. 2yrs later at the same auction was there again but in real rough shape this time. light sockets were rusted thorugh all cab lights ripped off rims bent all to heck fiberglass siding inside the cab belts all loose. didnt think it ran but got in it and started right up great. didnt stay to watch it sell but a month later i got a call looking for my 2470 parts and i asked if he was there and saw what it brought he saud about 3g and he bidded up 2500 for parts because he does custom work and had a bunch of those size tractors and i told him the story. what are the odds huh. didnt like my 4490 so much though. bought it ran good with rebuilt motor and spun a bearing. sat for 5yrs before i decided to fix and cost 5g just to fix and finally got rid of it trieing to sell for a 1yr 1/2. steering didnt work so good on that.

You do not want to hit the crab steer (or make even a slight correction) when in road gear! You"ll take a 45 right into the ditch. Otherwise, nothing to worry about. I used a 6-18 semi-mount plow on it.....something you cannot do with an articulated 4WD. They will break the plow with the side to side action. Leave it in front wheel steer and the plow follows like on a conventional tractor. Does increase the turning radius, but after 12 furrows you don"t need to turn short- just that first round. 4690 and later is when you get into the electronics stuff. 2470 is all mechanical.
