Truck tires

I bought four 700 x 15 tires for my 64 F100. I took the rims in for them to change. I was looking at the tires and noticed they say for trailer use only. The tires have hiway type tread. Is this going to be a problem? What is the difference between a truck tire, and a trailer tire. Stan

There was a post about this very thing on the implement alley forum the other day. Right now it's about half way down on page two on classic. Aparently there are trailer tires that have a whole different set of standards than passenger tires. There's even a link on one of the posts telling about it.

trailer tires are illegal to run/use on any thing but a trailer.

I believe they are a bigger ply tire, but have lower speed rating is this truck going to be going faster than 60 + mph

The difference is that the trailer tires are marked "for trailer use only". Other than that, I really don't know.

I would expect that a D.O.T. officer or maybe a highway patrol officer MIGHT give you some grief if they were a mind to, but in all reality, I doubt very much if the ol' Ford will give a hoot one way or the other. Drive it and be happy.

I sure wouldn't put them on a truck. The DOT are checking for everything on the roads. If you are involved in some minor accident, no matter whose fault, you're putting yourself out on a limb by having those tires on your truck. Everybody including DOT are in revenue collecting mode.

The trailer tires have a stronger sidewall than a regular tire to keep the side sway down but that's the only difference that I've heard of. Might be they won't stand the torque that a driven tire has to stand up to. Wasn't aware that it said that on them I'll have to look.

maybe nothing..but go out and have/cause an accident and see how fast the insurance company turns thier back on you or you have to pay for someone else because you had the wrong tires....... Anything is possible...

700x15... That sizing hasn't been used on road vehicle tires in decades. How old are these tires?

If they're more than six years old, the only thing they're good for is burning out old tree stumps. Look for a date code.

They'll work if all you need is something round and black to keep the rims out of the dirt. If you plan on driving the truck more than on and off a trailer for transport to/from car shows, you probably should look for something different.

Trailer tires aren't made to the same quality standards as passenger vehicle tires for some reason.

I guess I will have to spend some money. I put new tires on my 1955 Ford F-800 in 1985,they are still on it after 27,000 miles. My 1967 Ford F-100 came with original tires and 3,650 miles when I bought it from the original little old lady owner in 2000, I changed them in 2003 because they slipped in the fields while picking up baled hay. My 1991 Ford F-150 is still useing the Michelins that it came with 7 years ago, and the Harley Panhead is running the tires I put on it in 2000. It"s going to cost me a lot of money to update all of those.
