OT- In other news. . . Airport screening

Woman lives in Wyoming, commutes by air every week on Podunk Airlines to Denver to operate her business. Comes to the Wyoming airport as usual on Monday morning, but for a combination of reasons, no female screeners are available. She is told that she cannot fly. She says she will waive right to female screener- Male is fine- I just got to get to Denver, as I have every week for the past umpteen years. No dice- they send her home.

You can't make this stuff up.

Just heard that one the Cheyenne news, I can"t believe they did that.... if she is a terrorist we have enough firepower on the base to bring her down.

The story sounds fishy, maybe she was late? I don t like the TSA either but this smells.

More food for though... Personal experience below.

I am NOT a pilot, nor have I ever been, BUT I can walk into any airport in the country and rent a single engine plane from anyone who has one for public rental. I can show proof of renters insurance paid yearly to anyone who types out the agreement for the rental. I am not screened by anyone, not questioned by anyone. I'm given a set of keys to a plane and a 3rd headset for the intercom when asked. I can fly into any major airport and any small airport at my leisure. I can fly by visual flight rules which requires no flight plan. I can carry 600 pounds of load and it does not have to be documented regardless if its people, or products. I can talk on my cell phone up to about 3000 feet, text message up to about 6500 feet, and fly out over any lake or city.

Now, keep in mind that I do actually have a licensed pilot that does get the keys from me and is checked off to fly the planes I rent. But, he is never screened by anyone either because he picks up the keys at my home.

No TSA, no screening of any baggage, and 50 gallons of fuel that could make a heck of a boom.

Hush! Keep talking like that and they will start restricting general aviation next. Hasn`t happened yet, and I really don`t think it will. Funny how the terrorists got everyones eyes on the airlines, I doubt they will use that tactic again. I keep waiting for a cruise ship to go boom with a couple thousand people on it.

Worked at the airport in Charlotte for several months a couple of years back, and even though they put on a good show the actual security around the place is a real joke for someone with a plan and the time and inclination to make it work.

That said they can screen all they want inside the airport but what about the guy with the shoulder fired Stinger missle standing in a field 50 miles from thr airport. Aim, pull the trigger, and walk away.... Let's see the TSA regulate that............

That guy in Austin tried it! Remember? About a year or two back. Flew a 172 (IIRC) into an IRS building.
A 172 doesn't make much of a boom but sure made a mess.

That's a totally believable story! The ones at the outstations are typically the worst. There's been times when I swore there were more TSA than passengers. The ones at the hubs are typically better trained and not on a power trip.

I got into with TSA in Baton Rouge on day. I walked from the airplane to ops without an "escort" and the TSA had a fit. The only way they knew is because I went in one door early and they were all in the back on a coffee break! It didn't seem to matter to them that I had just flown the plane in there and didn't occur to them that I could have taken out the whole terminal if I was the bad guy.

So, I guess I can be trusted with a plane load of people but not to walk across 50 yards of ramp? I might throw a rock or something.

I've had them dig through my bag looking for nail clippers or razors and what-have-you and you can't explain to these clowns that on the plane I have within easy reach a crash axe and that axe is required by Federal law to be there and we can't even leave the gate without it!

In recent years there has been a rush to protect us from every imaginary enemy and to see them behind every bush and tree. The real terrorists are TSA officials who hassle honest citizens in the name of safety. I spend virtually zero time worrying about being attacked by terrorists but more than enough time getting hassled by legions of beaurocrats and "officials" all for my "own good" of course.

Seen this on the news, I don't see the fee listed , but a news caster said for a $100.00 you could join a club type membership that will allow you to process faster.

I am a pilot and sometimes work for a local Fixed Base Operator that rents aircraft, provides flight training, charter services ect.I see some problems with your idea. No one is going to rent you a plane unless you have a pilots lic., a current medical, and a type rating in that aircraft. Then you will go for a checkout ride with one of the FBO's pilots. A non-pilot in VRF rules ? I think you are going to have some serious problems managing aircraft systems, navigation and generally maintaing control of the aircraft. As for your cell phone and text, not sure what good that is going to do you in a stall/spin. Who would you call ? Even if you did get someone on the phone and they told you how to get out of a spin would you have any idea what they are talking about ? Not sure where the 600 pounds but I fly single engine aircraft that carry a lot more than that. Also it will be intersting to see someone fly into a major airport without a flight plan. Not sure what you mean when you say you "have a pilot" that "is checked out to fly the planes ...I rent because he picks up the keys at my house". Perhaps other General Avaition pilots can add something I am missing. Anyway, for those that don't like the TSA, Ron Paul is the only one to support.

Just let one aircraft go down because of onboard terrorist, and the same people say where was the TSA? Duh?

I thank them for all their work. I don't care about me, but I'm glad they're trying all they can to keep the crazies out of the plane me and my family get on.
We were told in numerous terror-prevent meetings, the problem you actually have is not some nnalert guy with a turban and a suitcase full of hand grenades. The actual problem is the guy you already know, and you know where he lives, the guy who knows it is his constitutional right to not pay utilities bills, who writes all the letters to the editor, who posts his rental house with tin cans and aluminum foil to keep the black surveillance planes off balance, its' that moon-bat you have to worry about.

Never did understand that one. You can't take weapons on board. Because we already have them on board for you.

I took a friend to the airport in Dallas. He has a walker and I have a limp. From cancer destroying my knees. The TSA idiots pulled us into a room. Wanted to know why I had a limp and he was using a walker. Told them he has a walker because he is 88 and needs it. They told him he could not board the plane with the walker. So I ask them. How the hell is he supposed to get to the plane. Well after they took his walker apart and about an hour of dumb a$$ checks. They let me take him to his plane. With the help of a shuttle car.

The TSA is the only reason I will never fly again. They grope you have not stopped a single terriost and steal from people. Complete waste of time and money.

NBC news said she WAS late. They had already called plane, so security area was shut down-- probably a small airport. Note the poster who moans about "just standing around". What do you want-- secuity staying there just in case or leaving when there is no real likilood of something to do?

It"s a very questionable story. Denver news reported that she stayed outside watching planes land and had waited too late to board becuase the TSA doors were already locked (small airport remember).

The passenger claims it was becasuse there were no fermale TSA agents. I"m not sure I trust the TSA version anymore than hers, but somewhere in the middle is the truth.

I still don"t trust the effectiveness or professionalism of the TSA

(quoted from post at 01:30:28 02/11/12) Just let one aircraft go down because of onboard terrorist, and the same people say where was the TSA? Duh?

No sh!t!!!! Think them folks enjoy smelling stinky feet and a$$es and the aquarium fragrances of some of hygenically challenged passengers...... The grandmas in wheelchairs getting searched are prolly accompanied real winners that wouldn't think twice about hidin thier stash on granny....
As for the lady that "waved" the female searcher, she'da prolly been screaming and suing for s@xual harrassment or groping.... It's a whole lot less a problem with cops and security folks as it is the idiots they are trying to protect.... If someone gets upset and decides not to fly anymore, just makes an extra place in line for me.....

Done now.....

As a 60 year pilot, I take what you just said as a real story. I have never just walked into an airport and rented a plane without lots of ID, ins, logbooks, license, medical and a check ride. Any one who would rent you a plane without those requirements is a fool and is breaking several laws. Also, you cannot just fly into any old airport you want since many of them restrict small aircraft from their airspace. also you must have a transponder and when you enter the area around a large airport must report to tower and follow their instruction. Failure to do so will bring harsh punishment. Think before you say something that is not true.

She showed up LATE and TSA had closed out for the flight.

Story about showing up and hour before the flight carries weight to be able to board.
