6000 ford steering problems.

I have a frend who droped the narrow front end of his 6000 ford in a wash out and broke off the shaft that the front pedistal bolts to. I pulled out the front bolster and replaced the shaft and the two short 1/4 hoses. The problem is that when you start the tractor it pulls the steering wheel out of your hands and goes all the way to the left, or right, somethimes center, and the hyd. press holds it there. I have an I&T service manual but it doesnt cover much on the steering. I know I have the two gears on the shaft right as they have master splines. Anyone else had this problem? Whats the cure? Thanks, Mike

I don't know if there's any similarity between those and a 3010 Deere or not,and the problem I had wasn't quite the same, but I had a 3010 that would, over a few weeks time, turn less and less to the left until it wouldn't turn left at all. I could turn it right til the wheels stopped, then the steering wheel would continue to go a few more turns.
I figured out that if I reversed the lines,so that turning the steering wheel right would make the wheels go left and vice versa,it would go all the way left again, then I'd have to switch the lines back. I finally put a small pair of quick couplers on that one so I could switch it fast and not loose oil.
I figured there must be something leaking by in that one. I wonder if yours has air in it,or a vapor lock or something. Have you tried switching the lines to see if you can work it out?

You replaced 2 hoses, did it break them? if yes then oil picked up dirt and in control valve causing to stick. Would need a complete teardown and clean with all new parts. Don't remember if they had the control in cylinder like the 4100 had but that valve caused trouble. Same setup was used on early Deere Combines.

I took a look at the parts diagram on the CNH site. It appears that the control valve sits on top of the motor right above the bolster. It looks like it is right under a cover plate on top. So you may be able to just flush out under that cover.
