IH 574 4th gear problem

I am new to this forum but see lot's of great information. I have an
IH 574 with the usual parking brake problem, but now know how to fix that. However, shifting into 4th gear is a "black art" to say the least. It will always grind horribly as if the gear was missed, whether stopped or moving, forward, neutral or reverse. Rolling with constant engine speed sometimes is successful. When I do manage to get it into 4th, it operates properly with no noise. I have adjusted the linkages but start to throw out the other gear alignments as I try to stretch for more rod to get into 4th. Does anyone have any suggestions?

not familiar with that tractor, but it sounds like adjustment or wear, i had an H farmall that the shifter and rails were wore and it would do that as it was trying to go into 2 gears at once

The linkages on those things are miserable. Sometimes its a game to see just how many different gears you can get into at the same time.

Have you posted on the IH portion of this board? More specialized info over there.

my 574 grandfather bought new. the clutch never seemed right i replaced it at about 1700hrs and the fly wheel was machined wrong from the factory. the clutch was slipping but made no blue on the flywheel just ran out of room. clutch disc wasnt wore out either. i did that and it shifts much better grinds once in a while but helped alot

You say forth gear, then talk about the high, low, reverse lever positions. SO is your problem with forth gear or with the high low lever? The arm for the high low fork is the weak link there and can get twisted so it could affect going into high and low. If that happens the lid needs to come off. Pull the shifter shaft out and just weld the arm back on the shaft . They break in the o-ring groove. We just weld them up and grind them down to slide in the hole without the o-ring.

No, the 4th gear problem is high, low, neutral and reverse. The only way I can get it into 4th is rolling with constant engine speed, sometimes a double clutch and holding my tongue in the right spot. That"s about 50% effective, but the 2nd or 3rd try puts it in. I appreciate your insight. Could it be that the speed linkage is throwing the 4th gear too far? I haven"t thought about pulling the linkage back in tighter. On the high/low, I actually put bushings into the linkage to tighten things up (everything has to work!). Thanks,
