hi gals and guys//// I know i"m out of the catagory but it is worth a try i am looking for info from all you scientist out there i need to know what straw will work in ponds as the barley straw does to eliminate alga etc. does budkweat rye, oat, etc any of them have the chemical action to do the job allways get good info on this site

Barley is supposed to be best but you can use wheat if it's all you've got. Needs to be sunny to work, rotting straw gives off chemical that reacts with O2 and sun light to make hydrogen peroxide. Never tried it, didn't sound like it was going to be too effect. I opted for chemical warfare.

I found it easier to treat with an algaecide. Last I checked around here only one guy had barley bales, they were $40 a bale. Thats a small square. I paid $20 for one the year before.

Sprayed an algaecide in 2009, haven't touched it since. Fish are fine. Much better job than barley bales. Cutrine. Readily available.

Note that some alga chemical have copper in them. Copper will kill an Alpaca. We even have to watch what is in our feed. I have not tried it yet, but was told grass hay is better than nothing.

thanks for the ideas by the way for all you farmers barley straw does work i have used it for about 10 years just getting hard to find at all here and esp for a good price and it does not have to be english barley i just wanted to know if anyone knew the chemical reacation other straw would have on the ponds i used to use chemicals but didn"t like them even though they worked swell so i have gone strictly to straw still looking for a chemist that knows the answer thanks
