needing a farm trk fast guy has a 1990 f250 4x4 with 302 engine. will be using trk to haul 2 rnd bales weekly they are 4x4 and pull a trailer ocasionly what do u guys think about the 302

I have a 1981 Mercury Cougar XR7 with the 302. It will carry 500 pounds of shelled corn in the trunk. Doesn't bother that 302 engine going up hills. Not so great on gas. It only has 56k miles on it. Hal

I had a 89 and 94 ford 150 with the 302. The 89 had a 4 speed, and the 94 had a 5 speed.the 89 could smoke the tires of with very little effort. I pulled two horses and trailer with the 94. Would lose quite abit on the big hills. The 302 will get the job done just not as fast as the 351.

We had an 85 Bronco, with a 302. Made frequent trips from Lacrosse Wis. to Lamoni Iowa, near
Missouri border, on I35, in Southern Iowa, I90
to I35, to pick up and return Daughter at
Graceland College, in Lamoni. 300 mile trip, all
interstate, but Max speed 65. Got a good firm
18 miles per gallon. Happy with it!

depending on the rear axle ratio and trans combination the mileage might not be too bad but for towing that 302 will be very anemic.

302 isnt the best for pulling. its more of a performace engine. id look along the lines of a 351 or a 460 if you want a gas engine. all my f150s have a 300 and they are almost bullet proof. with what you say your gonna haul a 302 would work i think but in an f250 your not gonna beable to do to much. a 460 is a hog but they got great power.

I would'nt want a 302 in a 250. My 92 f250 with a 460 didn't get much less mileage than my 95 f150 with a 302 and had alot more power. A 351 gets about the same mileage as a 460 and isn't even close in the power area. My f150 is a gutless gas drinker. A 302 belongs in a car not a pickup.

A302 will be adequet, for what you are deacribeingIf you were you were hauling big loads long distances-no.Short distances,feeding,etc,fine..My '70 F100/302 pulls a 17'gooseneck on mostly local hauls, but has done a couple '500 milers' and did just fine. Some of our hills slow him down, but it always gets there.Buy it and if you find its not what you really need, you can sell/trade it later,You're not married to it...Steve

The 302 was a good engine that made high RPM's quickly (as I remember). I'd guess it would be a match for a half ton truck but not so good for a 3/4 ton work truck.

I had a 1972 Ford LTD with the 429 engine and I saw that engine in some trucks. It wasn't too bad on gas I drove it to SC several times. It seem to run at a fast idle when cruising at 65mph. Hal

A 302 is a good engine and will do what you need to do, They are a better longer distance driving at 60 mph engine with a smaller load. The 300 is great too, but for hauling loads shorter distances. Dont know about the 351 as I never had one. The 460 is great if you have big loads and longer distances. You just need to decide what the main purpose of you truck will be. I have a 94 automatic 2 wd with the 302 for the longer hauls, a 94 4wd 5 speed with a 300 and flat bed for working around the farm and pulling smaller trailers short distances, I now have a 97 4wd automatic with the 460 to do all the big stuff. I always figured a pickup was for working and a car was for driving. Hope this helps.

I never knew that 302s were so hard on gas. I guess because most 302s that I knew were driven for performance and you expected it, but last year I bought an 86 F150 with 302 and AOD. I bought it for the automatic, but danged if my old 76 F150 with a 360 don't get better mileage than the 86. Personally, I would prefer the 300 six. There is only 2ci. difference and they develop more torque and get reasonable mileage too.

I've got a '94 F-250 2WD with the 302 (5.0) and 4AOD tranny. I really can't reccommend it, the engine just doesn't have the power you need at times, and it won't get decent milage unless you drive "wimp" style with an egg between your foot and the gas pedal. (Then maybe 15 mpg). It's the light 250 with the semi-floating rear axles like a 1/2 ton, but big brakes, 8 lug wheels and heavy front axle I also have a '95 F-150 4WD short wheel base with the 351 (5.8) and 4AOD and big 265 75R-15 tires and it gets better milage and it actually weighs more. (16.5-17mpg) The F-250 is quiet, drives nice and seems pretty solid, but just not enough uuummph. I had a '84 Crown Vic with the 302 and it was pretty good...real good after a friend "chipped" it. (20 mpg).

(quoted from post at 13:50:13 02/05/12) needing a farm trk fast guy has a 1990 f250 4x4 with 302 engine. will be using trk to haul 2 rnd bales weekly they are 4x4 and pull a trailer ocasionly what do u guys think about the 302

Its not a good combination and a money pit...

The 302 was a great engine just not a good truck engine. I've owned 3 of em over the years, all multi post injected. 2 in cars with AOD (26 and 28 MPG) and one in a Bronco with a 4 speed (16). For what you are saying it should work OK.
