Thanks for the pointers on my Farmall generator/voltage regulator problem. I tried running a separate ground to the VR with no luck. Ordered a new VR from a different source, 3 times as expensive as the first ones. That fixed the problem, it works fine now. Strangely enough the new regulator has "Made in the U.S.A." stamped on it. Maybe the bad ones came from the land of "almost right". Anyway thanks for the help.

Congratulations, Yours IS NOT the first time Ive heard of new out of the box VR's not working.

Ima thinkin in their prime days VR's were more closely matched to individual generators (i.e. Delco Remy and their many makes n models) with more precise field current regulation, better coatings on relay contacts, better quality control while today they may use more one size fits all with inferior relays and manufacturing in general. I like originality using gennys and VR's but I see why so many are converting to alternators I reckon
