Center dumb gravity box on a 5th wheel

Has any on ever taken a 350-400bu center dump gravity wagon and mounted in on a 5th wheel trailer, with bed cut out at hopper bttm? Most corn heads out in semi's, but I do store at coop 20 miles away and would be nice to be able to be able to have some one running and dumping at local feedmill to cut back on semi cost or being held up when truckers cant make it. Can find shorter older trailers for pretty decent price. I see some rear dischage tyupe on craigs list made in MN I think, but I am not spending $10,000.

Not sure what the DOT would say about that. I suppose if it was anchored in a way they would approve it'd be ok. Just remember that 400 bu of corn weighs 22,400lbs on it's own. You're gonna be over 30,000lbs by the time you throw in the box and trailer. Whatever you pull it with better be able to stop it and have the appropriate licences.

Good idea if kept modest. My only thoughts would be where to put the weight, and what to use to stop it. The 400bu capacity specs out at 22,400 pounds of corn at 56#/bu. This means a tandem dual trailer with 14K axels Then the load must be placed to be close to those so as not to crush the F450 used to make it move. Jim

I see farmers here pull two of them with just a 4-wheel drive pickup. How do they expect to stop in an emergency? We use a tractor.

Would use tri axle trailer, with elec brakes, if allowed. My 1 ton now has pulled (2) MN 250's with ext's fairly easy, but stopping with them, starting on gravel in 2wd, and the beating the truck takes is too much, not to mention the swaying of the wagons. Even if I just had a 300 bushel per load I would be happy. Just something I am tossing around. Need projects to keep me from being lethargic and watching Springer and Maury.

Used to be some running like that here in my area, used Kill Bros 400 beds (not sure of bu capacity, those beds would be 30 years old now) built for wagon gear and at that time the tandem axle wagon had not yet come about. Don't get to the elevator anymore for the last 25 years so don't know what is used now. And remember that the 3/4 ton is now rated for more than it was back then when they were using them to pull those trailers.

Dave if you buy a heavy enough trailer you could use the two boxes you have now. Just have on unload from one side and the other from the other side. A neighbor had a set up like that for several years and it worked good for him. HTH

Money wise, you're better off hiring a truck. Convenience wise, it's nice to have something like that to haul small amounts in a pinch.

The farmers around here who used goosenecks to do constant grain hauling ended up spending more money on engines, trannys, transfer cases and tires than they would have if they hired it out. Oh, did I mention fuel? And the DOT is really pestering those kind of trailers today. They pass up a big rig to stop a farmer with his gooseneck. I'd pull the wagon to the local feed mill with a tractor first if it's on sparcely traveled roads. The tractor is made for pulling a load and the Dot will pass you by as long as you have flashing lights and a SMV sign. Jim

There was one forsale on the internet a few weeks ago that I saw. I think it may have been at S and S equipment in KY. It'd be something to look at anyways. I think something like this would be very handy. Or like someone else said, chain 2 of them to a goose neck and go that route. We have several people around here that do that. Good luck.

At least for now, if the load is connected with a pin and has an SMV, it's agricultural and the DOT can't do a darn thing about it.

Put it on a gooseneck and you're now a commercial hauler.
