Maybe Some Day...

Yes, I think Hawker Sidley had one flying around 1959?60? The world barely noticed. The US Marines bought some several years later- and made it famous.... by the end of the Faulklands War, it was a household word. Only difference is these are suppose to be 'stealthy'.
All splayed out like a transformer toy must take some of that away, but on a deck or the ground, radar doesn't matter at that point.

WOW! That demonstration of V/STOL really get ya going. I used to watch the Marines with their Harrier jump jets in awe. They wear accused of tearing up the runway so they were not allowed to do a full vertical. In the darkness they would take off normally only the tower could not see that their gear hadn't been down since they began taxi. The forward force presence made possible by this technology is astounding. I wanna FLY Navy! Too old.

(quoted from post at 21:20:49 02/03/12) The Harriers [English] were doing that years ago.VTOL.

True, however what makes this plane is more advanced than the Harrier is inthe way that it creates its vertical lift.

When the harrier turns its jet engines to face down there is often a backwash of air that can cause the engine to suck its own exhaust. That sometimes causes the jet engine to go out. This causes the harrier to slam the last 6 to 12 feet to the ground. If only one engine goes out it is potentially fatal. as the plane will roll.

This fighter uses the jet engine driven fan (with a right angle gear box) that you see right behind the cockpit to create its lift. The intake and exhaust streams of the jet engine are still fore and aft so the engine has no problem staying lit.

How about this one
