Best Buys/Projects

OK Guys,

The money pit thread is a good one about lost causes. How about a happier topic, what have you done in the last year that can be considered a good deal??

Here's mine:

We've been loading hogs off the floor since we got back in the business a few years ago. Some would step into the trailer, most wouldn't without a fight. Late last summer I wrecked my shoulder talking them into making the step.

Finally got well enough and caught up enough to start this on New Years Eve Day. Used it to load out 3 days ago. Barely a squeal from the porkers and I didn't break a sweat or get angry. I should have done this months ago!!

So what is your best investment in the last year or so??

The Friday before Christmas I bought a used JD240 skidsteer. These things sure are handy. I keep building and dreaming up new attachments for it.

Good looking chute!

I found the easiest way to load hogs is to put a five gallon bucket over their head. They'll try to back out of the bucket and you can back them right up the chute.

I bought an Allmand TB20 backhoe at auction- intended to consign to a guy I do a lot of business with. But I had a couple little jobs I wanted to do, so asked him to drop it off at my house first, before taking to the sales lot. Once I used it, told him I would just keep it, thank you very much. Handiest thing since sliced bread. Very smooth operation, and it takes a little longer, but gets the job done.

Hogs to go around a corner and into a trailer better than they do going straight in. Looks like a really nice chute that should last a long time.

Best buy for me hands down is the Deere 7000 planter, not especially because it was better than the planter White sold at the time, but because it replaced an old plate type with runners. Second is a Deere 960 field cultivator. I've never bought a tractor I have felt comfortable about. Jim

In the "Best Buy" category I have to give it up to an Allis Chalmers WD-45 I just scored in trade for 50 small squares of hay. The old girl is all there and runs like a champ. I've got some electrical work that I need to address, but she's a great functional machine. Wish I could come across a deal like that at least once every couple of years...

A friend of mine usta 'top out' a lot of hogs; he hauled 'em in a 24 ft gooseneck; didn't have much trouble loading 'em, but they would refuse to come out of the trailer. He bought an Australian Shepherd and cut the escape gate at the front of the trailer in half so he could open just the top half. When he put the dog into the front of the trailer, the hogs would absolutely stampede out.
