Question: Tractor Tires and Thorns

My brother and I attended an auction on Tuesday and he purchased a set of rear tires/rims. We attempted to add air today, one will not hold air and the other one will not take air. We removed the valve core and ran a drill about 6" into the tire. The tire appears to be filled with some type of foam and it still will not take air, even after drilling. The tires have flat spots so the foam has broken down or what ever. Upon closer inspection both tires are full of thorns which have cut off or broken even with the tire surface.

My question: is it typical the add foam for use around thorns? We don"t have any thorns and would just add tubes - how does one de-mount the tires?

The tires are full of thorns no way to get them all out. if you put tubes in them the thorns will poke holes in the new tubes. thats why they had foam in them. I don't know what you can do with flat foam tires someone else will have to help you out on that one.

If you run over a porcupine [quills] the tyre is thrown away, you have the same problem.Maybe you can find a liquid to break the foam down, otherwise I would put it down to experience and cut them around the centre for a chook feeder.
I think an attempt to resurrect them with the foam has failed.

as the others said.. you are 90$ scre.. um.. up the creek.

the tire casings will be virtually impossible to remove intact with foam in them.

I've lost several tires over the years while bush hogging multiflora rose and brush. It sounds like someone tried to repair or get some more use out of the tires by filling them with foam. They're probably unusable unless you want to make up a manure scraper.

If the rims are salvgeable, I think I'd try a sawsall to get around the tire, and then use a die grinder to get down to the bead, and peel the tire off. Then you might find a useable rim or some metal for the scrap pile...

Foam filled tires, for use in mowing and clearing land, they last a long time but not forever. I think you had better cut your losses.

You didn't happen to buy those tires at the Dennis Polk Auction that was on Tuesday, did you? I was there for several hours Tuesday (I live probably 5 miles from there).... Lots of interesting things bought and sold there. Hope everything turns out well with the tires (sorry I can't be helpful).

BTDT... nothing to do with foam filled tires but run them forever then cut them off and junk em. My skid loader came with foam filled tires. Rough riding as a pig. I bit the bullet and cut them off. Managed to save all but 1 rim. That one was the reason for taking them off. Foam filled doesnt flex. So, the rim becomes the weakest link. Ripped a center out.

I bought 8 surplus tires from the Greater Cincinnati International Airport. They were 1100x16 4rib on rims. Me and the wife took her Ranger over to pick them up and got a big suprise on 2 of them, They brought them out on a lift truck and rolled them off in the bed And it droped the truck a good 8 inches thats when they told me they were foam filled. The 4230 needed front end weight so I put them on it, They are about 400lbs each so now it has plenty of wieght on the front. Come winter I pull one off and put it in the Rangers bed for weight and my wife can go anyware she wants and not get stuck in snow or mud! If they have flat spots they werent filled right and are about usless to use. These were filled with foam to cut around a grove a black locoust trees on the airport ground. Bandit

Yes, it was the Polk auction. We plan to give him (Polk) a call and at least let him know - sometimes people are repeat sellers and maybe something can be done - if not for us maybe for the next guy.

BTW - we are neighbors.
