alone in the wilderness

Have you heard of the story of Dick Proenneke, he went into the Alaska wilderness at age 50 and lived there 30+ years alone. There are a couple of clips of this on youtube for the viewing pleasures. He had some basic tools and was rather skilled with them all, especially the axe.

PBS TV runs his tapes when they are asking for money to support the station. Engineer by education. No blood pressure in that area.

I just recently watched the documentary about him. He was good at what he did. Very interesting story.

Didn't he pass away about 10 years ago?

From what I can remember I think his place is still standing isn't it?

(quoted from post at 12:35:06 02/02/12) Have you heard of the story of Dick Proenneke, he went into the Alaska wilderness at age 50 and lived there 30+ years alone. Yes. My daughter gave me a CD of him doing that. Very impressive.

Yes it is. Dick gave it to the park service and it became a
historic site which he could go to anytime he wished. As I
read in his book.

He used a tripod for most of it or held the camera himself to film different things where he wasn't in the scene. It was shot mostly with 8mm or Super 8. No sound, just narration.

One of the very best things ever shown on tv in my opinion. Has anyone seen the second part that came out? I enjoyed them both, and probably have watched them each about 20-30 times. Best time to watch it though is when the weather is cold, nasty, with a fire in the fireplace and a beer in hand.

Dick was injured on the job somehow. He went into the wilderness to test himself. It was to last only one year, but, ended up being 35 years. That's how I understand it.

If you enjoyed this man's story, you should try to find a copy (long out of print) of "The Ben Lilly Legend" by the western writer J. Frank Dobie. Lilly was the old panther hunter mentioned in some of Larry McMurtry's books. He spent his entire adult life in the outdoors during the late 1800s, early 1900s, moving around the southwest, hunting cats. Quite a tale.
