Ice fishing anyone?

I went up to my land in central Minnesota today to do a couple of things there.
When I go there I pass by Lake Mille Lacs on the way. It's the 4th or 5th largest lake in MN - about 200 square miles.
On the way back home this afternoon I stopped and snapped a couple of photos of the fish houses
out there. They are about 1/4 mile out. Generally there are a couple of thousand fishouses on the lake on any given year. Some of them are pretty nice inside. Just like a deluxe travel trailer with all the comforts needed to spend a weekend in.
We're having an odd winter here this year. No snow to speak of and warm.
My cousin today said there is only about 18" of ice on the lakes so far this year. In a normal winter we get twice that amount.
That one vehicle that is closest is a late model 4 door F350.
I know you guys from the cold country see this stuff every day. But I thought the guys from Texas, Florida, etc would enjoy seeing that life does not stop just because it's winter here.

Not in this neck of the woods! There have been a group of fishers on the local lakes recently. Haven"t seen any shanties on the ice. Had several days of well above freezing temps. Saw one fisherman coming off the lake today, he was pulling his gear in a plastic sportsman"s sled. IT WAS FLOATING. Not me, Idon"t swim well in ice cold water, amoungst chunks of ice!

If anyone saw the show "Dirty Jobs" dealing with the recovery of a vehicle through the ice the company that did the job was Tri State Diving (where I did my training and certs) in Detroit Lake MN. One of the divers on the show and who regularly dives for pay is my wife's youngest brother. I was talking with him last week and they have been out a lot going after fish houses, 4 wheelers, snow mobiles and full sized vehicles because of the odd year with the ice conditions and weather. We are located about 90 miles south east of Fargo Nd.

If you follow the link to comercial divine you can see some of the stuff they do besides training.

Read somewhere about an ice fishing derby somewhere- There was no doubt about the winner, because only one fish was caught- a 4 and a half inch perch.

Usually a lot of ice fishing here, this winter we haven't had enough ice to bother with. I'm supposed to do the Polar Plunge for Special Olympics in a couple weeks. Don't know that is going to work?

Jerry----In Sept.1972, I spent 2-3 days on Mille Lacs and other lakes in that area...lots of big water..

Going to take the GKids in 2-3 weeks for their first ice fishing trip to see if we can get some fresh whitefish.....beats playing video games, doesn"t it?

A guy fell through the ice in Waterloo, IA last night, and he drowned. It's been so warm here lately that only the very brave, or the very stupid, are out on the ice.
Good Luck and God Bless

I dont think so!god made winter because fishermen would never get any work done otherwise!!!makes me cold just looking at it!

I think this photo from Maine sums up the winter of 2011-2012 pretty well :)

I heard on the radio this morning that they're canceling ice fishing tournaments around the twin cities metro because of unsafe ice conditions.

If it is cold enough for ice then it is time to be inside unless you have a job that has to be done in the cold. Me I like 70 up.

You ain't livin' until you get in a nice little heated shanty with a big hole like a television screen on the bottom and get to see all them fish to by. If you can't hook em, spear em. And take a grandkid along. Michigan of course. There are a lot of places in other states. Be careful, real careful. Daved
