John Deere M 12 volt help please

Hey all i bought a 1948 john deere M that was already converted to 12 volt with a delco altenator any ways can i just run a 12 volt coil and get rid of the ballast resistor and will my points be fine tractor runs fine and all but id like to get rid of the ugly resistor thanks all!!!! :D

Make sure the coil is marked "no external resistance needed" if you have a wire from the solenoid to the supply side of the coil you have the extra hot starting juice,

Better add a diode to the wire coming from the starter to the +12v coil side. Been there, and found that the current running through the ballast would go to the starter and tractor will start and then die as soon as you get off he starter. Check an old post of mine, on this sight, titled "I should have done this a long time ago". There are pics of the diode explaining how to wire it.

Just go to any decent parts store and pick up a GM 12v coil with the internal resistor. Pert near anything from the 70's & early eighties. Just make sure it isn't labled for an external ballast resistor & you'll be fine.

There are no coils made with an internal resistor.Thats a foolish assumption.Coils voltage is determined by wire size and number of turns of wire.Dufus thinks that a coil that says no external resistor means theres one inside the coil.Theres no room inside the coil for a hot resistor.

Sounds good but the diode has a.7 volt drop across it.Diodes measure about 10 ohms forward resistance.

LOL great post!
