real estate taxes

Just got my real estate tax bill. Most of my farm ground tax has went up 100% to 300% since last year. Then they spend millions on a new school we can't afford. Now they need a new levy to run the school.

Just paid the first half of mine yesterday. (first half due by Jan. 31, second half by July 31 in WI) Property taxes are down for the first time in 6 years, here. For me, they are down $800 from a year ago, but still $200+ higher than 2010.

I live in "CROOK" County about 30 mi. west of Chicago. Taxes in 'o6 were just under 11K. Went to almost 17K in 2010. I protested last year and got them lowered by about $1500.00, but I'd really like to sell and get the heck away from here!!!

You have some silly people in Wi trying to recall the gov when he has made some great steps to get the state goin ahead too many state workers want their free ride.

Every little burg around here, local towns of 850 populations, one 2400, all have a new high school costing millions, and the one where my mail comes in, and from which I am Advalorem taxed is now redoing (brane new bricks and mortar) the elementary AND Jr. Hi......(Middle school in today's terms) after a couple of years ago passing the bond to finance the new high school.

You can't fight it because the moms are eat up with the motherhood syndrome which they can't control and will fight you to the death over their kids getting the best of everything, regardless of the cost and who is going to have to do without what to pay for it. It is an endless process and you can't win.

My question is, what good is it doing? Around here they have tests that are mandated that either the state or the fed dictates and you have to pass the tests to pass the grade....so guess what.....human nature dictates that to get students to pass you teach the test. Well what ever happened to the quality of education and the individuality of the teacher and all the things that you and I experienced coming up and made us what we are today.

I could rant on this till I got hoarse.

What is an honest value of the RE in 06 and what is it now? Not appraised, actual value that you would sell for.

mine went down in WI. first time[[[ever]]]thanks to our Governor but now the nnalert. and Unions want to recall him. and our schools have money to spend on the kids and not the teachers health ins.[from the union] and retirement benefits now they have to pay in to it little.

Yup, pulled that stunt here in the county where my farm is located. Residents said "we don't need that big school, make it smaller". School Board and and the county board of supervisors said NO. THEN we had a election and those ole boys are lookin' for work! That school isn't going to get built and last week the school leader decided she would retire.
I had an opportunity to see the county budgets for the last few years and was struck with what that bunch of crooks was doing. They had not been maintaining the school "because there wasn't money" but what they were really doing was diverting the money to other fancy projects--like a super-duper waste treatment facility (sewer plant).

Also what gets me is, people who own no real estate and young people who will not stay in the area vote for higher levies, then leave you with the bill.

Larry - Also in Cook County, and the property taxes just keep going up and up. With all the foreclosures around, wonder how many will now start losing their homes to tax sales. A month ago the Tribune had a list of properties going up for tax sales, 40 pages of 3 columns of fine print. It is going to get a lot worse before it gets better here. In Palatine every block almost has one or two vacant homes now.

Don't even get me going on taxes. In New York, organized crime have moved out of New York city to Albany. You have to pay off somebody to get anything done.

You wisconsin FOLKS I hope you can step up and help your governor. BAMBAM and his unions are going to put millions into recalling him.

Where are you at? I'm in Michigan, and my taxes have gone down 3 years in a row. Of course, I probably still can't sell it for what they say it's worth. :(

I guess other states work different but in Ky. the property taxes support the schools, and can go up only 5% or so a year. We do have ag. value on farms, a reduced rate, but you have to be a farmer. The collects a license fee also to pay for the county services. I was on the school board 12 years, after 2 or three years I could see that the School and the county were doing a pretty good job. Much of the money is controled at the state leavel, kind of frustrating really.

yeah - schools are out of control.

Our small town just approved a new school - 35 million - we pay half, the state kicks in half.

Fools around here view the half the state kicks in as "free money". They don't seem to get that state taxes come out of our pockets too!

I wouldn't mind so much if the design of the school wasn't so ridiculously expensive. Big curved glass front - lots of "open space".

Meanwhile, they're tearing down the old school and MY kids get to go to school in temporary trailers!

It all won't be done till my kids are through with school.

So not only to I get to pay for the school, but my kids get to go to school in trailers!

I just don't get why if my kids can learn just as well in small temporary shelters... can't we just keep them, and save 30 milion dollars???

All this talk about taxing the rich, making them pay their fair share, etc.
Do people really think this extra taxing is going to stop with income taxes?
Think of a guy who has a small farm in good farm country somewhere - say 200 acres. Now at $7000
per acre which I hear good land is going for in some places that land is worth $1.4 million.
There are a lot of people who look at the small farmer and all they see is that he is a rich man.
And between income taxes and property taxes they will come collecting from him till they break him.
Look at what happened to the great land owners during the French, Russian, Chinese, even Cuban revolutions. Those big private holdings were broken up and given to the "the people".
Once we go down that slope of taxing the rich we are in for a huge assult on private property.
Even the little pittance of land I own makes me look wealthy to some person who has nothing.
This class envy and tax the rich business is scaring the hell out of me.

you have no idea what you are talking about gov walker is stealing from the poor to have big givaways to some rich that allready have alot i also live in WI and my taxes went up and i hope we get a man with no moral coumpass out of office

I belong to an organization that is active at elimination school properrty taxes in Penna.

I am one of many through out the state that are circulating petitions to present to our state legislators for the elimination of the school tax.

NO TAX SHOULD HAVE THE ABILITY TO LEAVE A PERSON HOMELESS!

IMO!

gov walker has not helped any one in the middel class we have lead the nation in JOB LOSS for the last 5 months and public uinons did not hurt the state buget he and all of his right wing trickel down economic crap need to go away my taxes have rased for the last 6 years and this was the worst of all we did tot have any new projets in our dristric in fact we need a new roof on the school it has leeked for 9 years thea i know of

Mine went up over 100% too. Seems the state has decided that all open land is cropland and is based on the price of corn, wheat, and soybeans. This includes swamp land and permanent pasture - any open land. I crop less than 10% of my land, but pay the high taxes on all of it. Taxes are based on soil type and a lot of mine are poorer soils and mine only went up a little over $2000 this year. One fellow I know with good soil went up over 400% and was told another fellows taxes went up over $7000 on less than 200 acres. Our schools will benefit, but the farmers will pay dearly!

I live close to Wisconsin and do a lot of Business in Wisconsin. More states need a governor like Walker. The public unions are the worst unions in the country. In Wisconsin, public employees paid nothing towards their retirement or health care. He made them pay a portion and the unions are up in arms. Employees in most private businesses and other states employees contribute a portion to both health care and retirement. It's about time Wisconsin public employees do too!

rase means to obliterate, in razed, I think you missed an "i".
Alters the whole meaning though, doesn't it??

"i" is the difference between laughing and crying.

you must be a teacher or working for the state.I say Walker for president. Some thing has to be done.........

The gov of our state put a great process into motion just in the last month. Some sort of tax break to jump start business.

To pay for it, he has some 'tax loopholes' closed from here on out.

Well, closing 'loopholes' means raising taxes. Sounds good to say closing loopholes, but.... So, how does this help create new jobs, or stimulate business? Give to one, take from another - no gain.

In my town just got a $100,000 grant to a couple that is renovating a delapodated old hotel. It will cost 1.2 million to do so, and be converted into 6-8 'art sudios' for painting and dancing. The gal has a plan for another $270,000 tax break coming to her pockets, and other 'ideas' to raise money - seems to all be tax money to her pockets.

How in blazes does this raise our ecconomy up? It takes over a million bucks from people, and gains us what? Art studios so people can dance? A fine persuit, but that is not creating wealth, that's not fruthering the ecconomy. I'm all for art & dance studios, but why over a million dollars out of my and your pocket for it? It's a drag backwards......

$17,000 per year tax is roughly $46.00 per day for the privelage of living on your own place that you bought and paid for, you are a victim of grand theft by government, that is the kind of taxation that is going to eventually push people over the edge.

I agree 100% It's not the building that educates kids. Here in Michigan, the school districts are building monuments like you mention. Big thing they mentioned after a recent millage vote was the "smart" boards they have in every classroom. Cost a bunch of money. Heck, the boards are smarter than the kids AND the teacher in the class. I learned with chalkboards and got a degree in college without "smart" boards. Just a big waste of money.

Governor OweMalley in Maryland DID NOT RAISE TAXES. Busturd put a "flush tax" on septic systems. But it's really not a tax. It's a 'fee', like all the other 'fees' that were raised.

Thats a classic example of what tax dollars should not be spent on, if there is any interest in the community for the studios then she should be able to raise the money privately, she has been granted a license to steal from the taxpayers. All across the country we have Mayors, County representavies, State Legislators, US Congress members etc. that act like fuedal lords, these arrogant criminals scorn the average citizen and spend our money at will, absolute term limits at every level of government are long overdue, one term and out should be the law of the land.

no i am not a teacher or a public worker i am a self emploid carpenter and i know that if we have tax rates that benifit the low end trough the middel class we all do better we have not had top tax rates this low since the 1920s and you all know what happend in the 1930s

Paid our taxes in Dec. Unfortunately, didn"t look at them when the "estimated" sheet came out in May and it was too late to protest.

The taxable value for the house & 1 acre at the farm went up from $86,000 to $132,000+. Wow! Didn"t know we were keeping up with the Jones". Maybe even passed them!

All the other acreage went up by at least 10%.

Ouch.

Will definitely protest this year.

You guys sure make me glad I live in good old Tennessee.. N O INCOME TAX modest property taxes and 9% sales tax . Most farm suplys are exempt

I would like to know what school district you are in also. I know that there are a couple districts that on the eve of Act 10 being passed, quickly signed new contracts with the teachers (and a couple county or city workers but mostly teachers). The thing is, the districts KNEW the effect that agreeing to pay out the extra money to the employees would cause. They KNEW it would create a huge tax burden but they decided to screw over the tax payers anyway. You, of course, cant blame Walker or the legislatures for those actions, those contract signings were willingly done by the local boards and EVERYBODY knew it would end up raising taxes.

If you have a bone to pick over your taxes going up, it should be with your local board that decided to raise taxes. The 90%+ of other districts that chose not to willingly raise taxes are now enjoying the lower tax bills thanks to Walker, the legislatures and the majority of Wisconsin residents that elected them.

Personally, Im enjoying my lower taxes. Thank you Gov. Walker. I intend to vote for you during the wasteful and unneeded recall election (9 million and counting, just think if that money could have gone for the children?). Keep up the good work, please. We cant afford any more of the near criminal running of the state that happened under the last Gov.
