Big OT-Squirrel Tails

Marty,

I've never tied flies but when I was a boy, it was a big deal for the boys to take their squirrel tails to school. It was a real status symbol to have both greys and reds.

I suspect that maybe times have changed since then.

It was a big deal to hang them off your radio antenna on your car.....when you could afford to get one. Course for country boys Coon tails worked ok too.....sorta a status symbol....separating the "men" from the wanna bees. Grin.

Can't say I tied flies, but who didn't used to play with them, take them to school, and best of all chase girls with them haha. I'm under 30 and I still remember doing all that. I couldn't wait for my Dad to start skinning the squirrel and toss me that tail

..nothing wrong with how we grew up

i thought this was a post about the squirrel tails that the old trucks used to show out the stack at night, mostly the old 220, 262's and supercharged 275 cummins powered ones would push fire out the top of the stack about 10 to 15 inches when you leaned hard on the motor, mostly visible at nite, truckers called this plume of fire a squirrel tail back in the day

When I was a kid we used to throw every squirrel tail into a shopping bag in the chest freezer. Once a year my dad would take them to the fur company to trade for leather gloves. I remember asking why they only wanted the tail and not the whole hide, but he didn't know. I never thought about tying flies, that's probably where most of the market was. That or making Mepps spinners.

Squirrel feet as a kid in Iowa we would send one foot from each squirrel with some info to the state DNR. Thinking Hurters now Cabelas bought squirrel trails in the day.

When I was a kid, my Dad paid me 25 cents for every ground squirrel tail I brought him. It was very challenging to hit them with my single shot .22 and the quarter I got for their tails pretty much paid for my ammunition.

Ground squirrels used to be a real problem around here, with lots of pasture damage. For some reason I hardly see any ground squirrels any more--don"t know why.

I used to try to tie flies, but always had better luck fishing with ones I bought.
